http://driftglass.blogspot.com/

a viciously good blog with photos about the great "republican wet dream" playing out in New Orleans. This guy pulls no punches.

4. Hmmm.
Why do flood victims suffer?
By SHMULEY BOTEACH

Just a little over a month ago I visited the Gulf Coast states of Mississippi and Louisiana on a radio road trip across America's Deep South. When I arrived on Bourbon Street in the French quarter of New Orleans, with its sex shops and year-round Mardi Gras drunkenness, I told my listeners, jokingly, that no doubt the Big Easy (as New Orleans is known) would one day be swallowed by the earth in some awesome display of the divine wrath. The joke became all too real in the terrible aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that devastated the Gulf Coast, leaving New Orleans submerged in a deluge reminiscent of Noah's flood.

To be sure, I have no idea why God allows such calamities to befall and kill innocent people. Indeed, those who suffer the most in these natural catastrophes – the poor and the destitute – are usually those to whom life has already been unkind, and it was an added misery that Mississippi, already the poorest state in the union, bore the brunt of this monstrous storm.

But a famous evangelical pastor who is a regular on my radio show said that, while he did not quite know why God sent the hurricane against the New Orleans area, he did know that a city-wide gay pride parade which was scheduled for next week had been canceled by the storm. Not surprisingly, many of my religious callers, while refusing to say outright that God had punished the area between Biloxi (gambling) and New Orleans (sexual immorality), they certainly reminded me that the Bible does say that God's wrath will not rest forever. (The discussion became positively painful when two callers insinuated that the Holocaust was a divine punishment for the Jewish rejection of Jesus.)

WHAT IS at issue here is not just the rancid old chestnut of some religious people attributing natural disasters, like last year's tsunami, as being the consequence of sin, but something far more insidious.

7. Or, maybe, a city in the south just got hit by a big hurricane...
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:39 AM by MercutioATC
Jesus, it's shit like that this that gets us branded as idiots.

I don't recall Clinton working to upgrade the levees to withstand a CAT5 hurricane.

The issue is preparedness and response, not "Republicans want to kill blacks".

Wanna know why middle America thinks Democrats are weak morons? This shit is the reason.

The mods saw fit to delete the post I was responding to.

Holly_Hobby's post didn't offend me in the least...I was simply responding to it (perhaps a bit harshly, in fact).

Regardless, my response makes no difference with her post deleted and I'm withdrawing it.

10. He's using inflammatory language to make a point...
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:55 AM by Solon
If you would actually READ past the damned headline. The article, in its entirety, is a slam on Bush's "Ownership Society" where the poor, as you know, will be left in the dust, or in ten feet of water in this case. Also, I'm no Clinton fan, so I partially blame him for negligence as well. Not only was the RESPONSE botched, and botched badly, but preparation was also put on the back burner to the loss of too many lives and livelyhoods.

12. I realize that, but by being intentionally inflammatory, he's making a
ridiculous statement. That's precisely why so many people on the fence are leery of Democrats...they group all of us into this bullshit-spewing clan.

16. I don't see it as ridiculous, and here's why...
Bush's "Ownership Society", and the policies being put in place to implement it, with the "free" market at the lead, will adversly affect the poor. In addition to that, considering that most of those people also happen to be either black or latino, I would say that any long term plans they have in place are, at the very least, indifferent to the very survival of minorities in this country.

18. Maybe, however, to be honest...
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 02:45 AM by Solon
I empathize with the spirit of the article, I don't even necessarily disagree with the use of language. I would sympathize more with what you say, and I understand what you are saying. However, know this, people are angry right now, and that fury manifests itself in many different ways, whether through this type of outlet or others that are even less constructive. I will say that no matter how well thought out my posts are, my fury at the lack of adequate response by all levels of government to this tragedy is no less than either the OP or the writer of the article in question. Hence my defense of them. If people do not wish to mince words, they shouldn't, and to be honest, I strongly doubt that this particular blog, or others, will effect either the votes or attitudes of "middle" America.

19. I understand where the sentiment comes from.
I just disagree with the way the author chose to express it. I, too, am incredulous at the level of ineptitude shown by the government in handling this situation. I, too, am furious at their apparent lack of sincerity and the trite spin they put on events to cover their asses.

I still feel that inflammatory articles like this are counterproductive. Not mincing words and being intentionally inflammatory are different things. I agree with the first, but I feel the second does us a disservice. I think the author went over that line.

You're right, most of middle America won't read this particular blog...that's not my issue. I do have an issue with the reactions stuff like this causes in some people. Somebody reads this article, gets upset that Bush is "drowning Negroes", tells people at work, and we as a group lose credibility.

With so many legitimate issues to criticize and so many intelligent ways to express dissatisfaction, I just don't see the need for something this extreme.

:eyes:

Had you read MY post you'd realize that I'm arguing that it's anti-Bush to the point of apparent lunacy. With all of the completely valid criticisms available right now, do we need to stoop to stupid inflammatory shit like this?

20. The *RW machine is murdering blacks in NOLA.
That is FACT.
They were prepared NOT TO RESPOND and have prevented many who ARE prepared to from assisting in humanitarian relief.
That is FACT.

Clinton's "Disaster Mitigation" was scuttled by the *dauphin.

The blog is GREAT! That Driftglass feller doesn't mince words!

22. The lack of response has meant the deaths of the poor who could not get
out. Most of them were black.

That does not equate to racism.

what "Middle America" thinks - what happened in N.O., and all along the Gulf Coast is inexcusable. And Bush ass sucking Middle America can take a flying fuck at the moon. I'm ashamed of this country, if I had the means I'd leave today and never look back. It was "Middle America" that put these pond scum bastards in office.

23. Want to lose yet another election? I don't.
Look, the lack of response killed proplr who couldn't/wouldn't evacuate. Most of them in NOLA were black.

That's not racist, it's classist. Trying to turn it into a racial issus accomplishes nothing and encourages people to ignore the real problem - poverty.
