Sign Up for Emergency Housing Drive: www.hurricanehousing.org (MoveOn)
Just received the following alert. MoveOn is coordinating offers of housing for people left homeless by Katrina. Here's the site and most of the letter:

Dear MoveOn member,

Hurricane Katrina's toll on communities, homes and lives has devastated the nation. Now victims must face the daunting question of where to go next—and we can help.

Tens of thousands of newly homeless families are being bused to a stadium in Houston, where they may wait for weeks or months. At least 80,000 are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced.

This morning, we've launched an emergency national housing drive to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) and search for available housing online at:

http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans.

Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help.

But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

The process is simple:

You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. We'll do everything we can to get your offers where they are needed most. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on....

I advertised an apartment in Maryland if anyone can get up here. Would be better for people closer to NO.

Sorry if this is a dupe -- there's a lot going on today and the search function is down.

We've got two empty rooms in Atlanta, a library with a fold-out couch and a La-Z-Boy recliner. We can comfortably take in six or seven people, more if anyone wants to sleep on the floor. I've got a lot of leave time saved up and a big kitchen. Come to Modem's house peopel!

2. Kick!
The site appears to be jammed -- it took several replies to get the listing accepted. But it is functional.

7. I have a 1-room
building, damaged by last year's 'canes..but it could be fixed up in a weekend, easily! Has a bathroom, and kitchen...needs some work, but better than nothing!
I would give this free to anyone that needs a spot to crash.
A couple, or a couple with one or two kids, are invited to apply! Pets are OK too! The more the merrier!

8. I'll print this out and post it locally in public places.
I'm in eastern Oregon, in the boonies, but it's just as likely that people up here might have friends and/or relatives in the South who are
willing and able to help.

It's important to get the word out. In fact, I just thought of a friend with lots of relatives in Alabama. Heh. She's about to get an e-mail.

Great idea.

regarding relief information and resources.

I also put in a nomination for your thread to be in "Greatest".

So one way or another, DUers in the South will receive the call.

11. Plenty of Room at My Place
I feel so awful/guilty being in a spacious place with plenty of rooms. I have 3 spare BRs and posted to a sight that I'd like to help. I'm in Indianapolis though and that might be why I haven't gotten a call yet.

14. Kick This is a great idea, I am supporting as best I can with prayers and
posting on "neutral" sites like AOL and Yahoo Message boards with links to truth sites which is how I found out about the political side of the Web and how much the WaPo had been lying or omitting for decades.

I live in a tiny apt. with others and am too far away but want to know what is going on to let others know and to post where I can where people might not be aware of Moveon.org and people are getting really angry with bush and CReepers can't keep up with the outrage that Bush is preventing help from Canada and Venezuela and he is allowing people to die. Many decent people are just waking up and some sites like DU can let them know in more detail the vibes they have been getting about this evil regime now THE EMPEROR REALLY HAS NO CLOTHES to his murderous plans for America and the world.

So I reach out in that way and wanted to make sure this site is Kicked so as many people as possible can know about this wonderful idea to circumvent bushco's attempts to murder as many people as possible for his PNAC World Dominion plans.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE AND PEOPLE POWER!!!
