ALERT - It may be wise to buy groceries NOW! Trucks may stop moving.
Truckers I have chatted with online today say that they expect diesel fuel shortages soon, and if that happens, food will not be getting to the stores.

If this rumor is true, perhaps it might be a wise thing to lay in some canned goods and staples. If it does not come to pass, you aren't out anything as you needed to buy that food eventually anyway.

5. Already did that.
Brought in $80.00 worth of canned goods and unperishables yesterday.

Please, DUers, plan for the worst NOW.

And don't forget to tell your family and neighbors to do the same. If everyone in the village takes care to prepare the village we can survive anything together. It's only when someone doesn't have basic necessities that they attempt to take yours.

Watch out for your neighbors. If we each reach out to just one person, and prepare for the worst together, we survive together.

I don't think this is a bad idea
This is a national emergency. With even greater increases in oil prices, the economic effects will be severe.

Meanwhile, our government is letting thousands of Americans just die. It's starving people to death in the affected areas. This is just SICK. SICK SICK. Fuck.

Oh and let's not even mention Iraq.

7. Sad. I was thinking of doing this tomorrow morning.
I am cleaning out my freezer and will take money out of savings and stock up. Even if there are no shortages, it is a sure bet that prices will jump due to the rise in fuel costs. Also, I read that coffee prices are expected to increase because NO was the major port of entry for this country's coffee imports, and that coffee stored in warehouses there, were most likely destroyed.

17. I live in a hurricane prone area and
these are the things I always have on hand this time of year so I don't have to rush out if a storm is coming--candles, batteries, bleach/soap, bottled water, canned food/stuff that doesn't have to be cooked, cat and dog food, charcoal/lighter fluid/matches and bandaids/hydrogen peroxide/first aid kind of stuff.

10. Maybe a good time...
to think about seeds of vegetables stored somewhere. Guys, you're only at the BEGINNING of hurricane season.... Maybe your garden or porch would make a very nice and wanted vegetable garden, no ?

12. The trucker buzz around here.....(midwest)
Some friends of mine that have trucking companies and other owner/operators they have spoken to are saying that on Sept. 10th they're shutting down their operations/trucks for at least a day and possibly longer in protest of the high fuel prices.

When truckers get pissed it ain't a pretty sight.
Let's wish them (and us) luck.

13. It's a good idea no matter what, especially when times are good for you.
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 01:41 PM by DinahMoeHum
It's called "saving for a rainy day".

Years ago, I started a food-storage program for myself, and my family has one as well, for use in case of emergency, from natural disaster to economic problem, ie. losing job, government financial crash, etc.

Not just food/water, but health/beauty needs, auto, portable stove, fuel cartridges, solar shower, etc.

During Triple-H weather (hazy, hot, humid), I keep a couple of plastic ice bars in the freezer. If power should go out, they'll keep food in the fridge/freezer cold for longer.

All these preparations put together mean at least one less person/family on the dole-out line.

18. I do this too
It's come in handy not only during storms, but also a time or two when we've found ourselves with an unexpected bill or something.
