that Bush cut funding for the NO levees to pay for that GD caper in Iraq.

41. and NOLA's vulnerability is a well-travelled "information superhighway"
I remember learning about the potential problem with levees (especially during storms or tidal surges) back in elementary school, in the 1970s. I suppose that Bush thought that the city's flood protection was ornamental, or some Democratic make-work project that could be cut back?

But I really want to know what pro-Bushies are thinking now. How can anyone look at this and say the government is doing a good job? What is their rationale?

15. Are they really saying that over on the conservative boards?
Have they not heard about the mayor's estimate?

Maybe that's the real difference between liberals and conservatives. We look at the future and try to understand it, good and bad, whatver it will be. They look at the past and try to ignore the future. (Interesting hypothesis, anyway.)

Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 07:46 AM by DistressedAmerican
This could have been prevented or at least the effects greatly reduced if he had taken action days ago. I live in upstate NY and Katrina got to us before Bush got back to Washington!

We need FEDERAL response and we needed it days ago when much of this could have been prevented.

This post reeks.

Why do I get the feeling you are not from around here?

As I posted before, even with all the local, state, and fed help dispatched to the area, there still will not be enough help.

It's impossible without a coordinated plan beforehand. There were tens of thousands who had no transportation. The evacuation plan should have had enough resources allocated to it in the first place.

fucking days. The mayor said that they had and Bush was not AVAILABLE? They needed federal level resources asshat.

Troll that crap elsewhere.

Here's what Bush was up to on day one of the disaster:

Here's what Bush was up to on day two of the disaster:

And Day three:

That is not leadership in a time of crisis. The mayor and Govenor mobilized what resources they could without the federal support they deserved.

Take your bullshit and walk right back where you came from

35. Half-assed action, given the predictions
Urging residents with no means to leave or place to go is a half-hearted and incompetent response at best. Means should have been provided, and proper shelters set up Friday and Saturday. This was a supremely incompetent response given the dire warnings and predictable results. FEMA failed miserably, and continues to fail. The Department of Homeland Security's budget is for absolute shit. Unprepared, but now damn well prepared to cast blame in every direction, and accept no responsibility at all, as per usual for the Bush Administration. Disgraceful behavior.

36. Hey handprintfish
Your president is a lying, idiotic, TRAITOROUS, un-American, warmongering, murderous, bigoted, evil motherfucking son of a bitch piece of shit. He's a drunk and a coke head. He's a coward and a chickenshit. He runs and hides. He skipped out on National Guard duty then sends NGs to their deaths today in an unnecessary, illegal, immoral war on a country that did nothing to us. He's the shame of our country. He's the worst president this good country has EVER had to suffer under in her 200 plus years.

His momma and daddy have to do everything for him. Had to get him into schools he didn't deserve to go to. He had to ride on his coattails to even get noticed in politics.

He's not a Texan, he's from Connecticut. He's a poser and a phony. He's not a cowboy---no cowboy is afraid of horses, what a motherfucker. Afraid of horses, my God.

He has taken more vacation than ANY president ever has. Any time anything happens you can gaurantee he's having cartoon and nap time at the pig farm.

He's a yellow-bellied sack of shit. And a disgrace to our nation.

30. How much of our tax money goes to the Department of Homeland Security?
This is their province these days, since Bush's realignment. The city and the state were meant to design an emergency response plan, but where was FEMA with resources? The City of New Orleans can't afford to move all those people or enforce a mandatory evacuation. Only the Feds can do that. And they didn't, primarily because your dear "Leader" and his cronies are incompetents of first order. They have literally fucked up everything they've been assigned to do. Horrific ineptitude. Why have we been paying the Departmenmt of Homeland Security, if they can't even deploy a reasonable plan when given three days notice on a looming disaster? Is this the kind of hem-hawing they would do if a city was attacked? Where is the coordination? Where are the resources? Where's the plan that we pay so many billions for? Where is it? You Mr. Bush bills himself as the security President. He can't even secure the City of New Orleans when American citizens are dying. Aren't you a little fucking embarrassed yet?

33. I was in Lower Manhattan on 9/11
I tell you this, there were feds swarming the streets before the north tower collapsed. We walked up the FDR drive (and I'm talking way downtown, by the south street heliport), and black SUVs with US Gov't plates came streaming by every thirty seconds. I9 kinow, because they were also headed north on the FDR, and the whole crowd had to surge to the right every time they passed. Anyone who was there will tell you. Latino guys with no shirts on (recent immigrants, I'd guess as a lifelong New Yorker) ran behind the SUV's as they came by, cuz it was faster than walking in the crowd. The north tower collapsed before my eyes about twenty minutes later. I was just reaching the Brooklyn Bridge from the loopy FDR entrance ramp.

37. Homeland Security is a joke agency
And probably little more than a money pit for Bush cronies. This is not to say that some of its previously separate sub-components don't do good and needed work. they do indeed. But the purpose for piutting them under the one umbrella was to have COORDINATION for just such catastrophes. That coordination has proven to be illusory at best, flat out non-present at worst. Their budget is therefore useless, if they cannot effect the safety of American citizens under predictable threat. Imagine if a major terrorist attack had happened in, say, Atlanta. Would there be sufficient planning for evacuations and shelter, or would it be handled in the manner of the ownership society as New Orleans, where those with means catch as catch can, while the devil takes the hindmost? The hindmost pay taxes too, in this great ownership society, and DHS flapped in the breeze for days rather than assist them. This is a national disgrace and international embarrassment, and yes, heads should roll - whether Brown or Chertoff or whomever: incompetence that costs lives is unacceptable even in the most "minor" jobs; in government, it is unacceptable.
