11. when i was stationed on a ship in Norfolk, VA it was standard
procedure to pull out to sea until the hurricane was over because the ship would do great damage to the pier by battering into it. Fortunately none of the hurricane scares I was involved ever amounted to much. I do believe I was there for the one that Pat Robertson notoriously prayed away (his organization is in the area). I guess I owe him. :crazy:
I was on a Ride with the USS La Salle last year before it was Decommished and we hit a storm in the Agean that tore some of the frame off. Just a couple of peices of steel ripped off the hull costed about 10,000 bucks to repair not to mention all the compartment damage sustained from pitching around so much.
I love riding storms though, it helps me loose weight :0
Yes, the Great White Ghost was mothballed March of this year. I was on her last Med cruise out of Gaeta, Italy. The USS Mt. Whitney replaced her duties. I'm now stationed in Naples, (sh)Italy.
18. All the aircraft carriers AND nearly all the NAVY bases my
father was stationed on during his long career have been decommissioned or closed.
USS Roosevelt (Theodore)air craft carrier he was aboard this in North Atlantic when waves were washing over flight deck -- USS Ticonderoga -- NAS Barber's Point, NAS Alameda -- plus lots of east coast bases.
I believe Moffett Field - is still in open.
Damn I feel old -- I grew up on those Naval Air Bases.
During the Vietnam war several fleets were caught out in major typhoons -- and I've heard similar stories from sailors about the waves washing over the air craft carrier flight decks.
Just a couple of Minehunters in Brownsville, Texas (Ingleside), a couple of Keels in Pascagoula, MS. and some Carrier groups in Jax(no public is allowed for transport on these).
