Could Somebody Please Give Some Good News?
It could be big or small, local or international, but ANYTHING to get a weary world through this weary day? Even the shuttle landing safely isn't enough in the face of unrelenting heat and war.

It's a small step but a good one. My brother Doug is starting his own security company. My nine year old niece, the hemophiliac one, finished third in a pre national dance competition. Her name is Destiny Marie.

10. I'll give it a shot.
The toddler went down for a nap without fighting it.

I got my yard mowed and my car washed without passing out from the heat.

My Republican County Commissioner can't run again because of term limits and the GOP is already bickering over the slot while the Dems have got a candidate filed, organized and backed.

I'm still on cloud nine because of finishing my dissertation this weekend. Now I'm in wait mode while my husband and my sister proof the SOB. <This is particularly good news for Democrats because I can turn my attention BACK to local party operations.>

I found a chardonnay at the grocery store in this cute little container (think Parmalat milk type) that holds three glasses. And it's palatable! Goodness is it going to be easy to smuggle wine into places now.

GWHB and Barbara did not have MORE sons.

Sorry....I went on a news blackout for mental health reasons this week otherwise I might be able to scrounge up a few more things more relevant.

11. Feeding the Hungry with fresh produce
I work for a food bank/food rescue nonprofit in my community. I am working on a campaign to get local folks with backyard gardens and community garden plots to donate their extra food to our food rescue program. Well, 'tis the season and the beautiful fresh, mostly organic wonderful veggies are coming pouring in - I got about 150 pounds dropped off so far today - beans, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers.

I am a big fan of fresh local food and I am THRILLED at how well it is going.

So yeah, it's local, and small, but it has made me smile several times today...fwiw

You are a wonderful person. I'm sorry I have a purplish-black thumb. I live on a very small lot so I won't use up land other people could be using to good purpose. My house plants are all plastic and silk. I'm bad. I mean really bad. I am in awe of successful gardeners.

Bottom line is if you pay attention to politics 24/7, you overdose on the negative, and become infected with morose.

32. Okay, I'll give it a shot.
I have been actively recycling for well over a year now. We don't have curb pickup without paying a separate company for it. Being inherently cheap, I take it in my car to the community bins behind the local grocery store. Surprisingly, I do not find this to be a pain in the ass. In fact, I'm amazed by how little we have to actually throw away every week.

Next? I'm thinking about either a worm farm to make compost or Bokashi (which is a biological agent that breaks down organic matter that's not supposed to smell) which can also be used as compost.

And, even though I totalled my car this spring, my mother lovingly gave me hers that has better gas mileage and she bought a hybrid.

33. You have a very sweet mother!
And congrats on the recycling! Good work!

We have been recycling for years & sometimes our garbage can only has one bag in it but our recycling bins are over flowing. Across the street, however, our neighbors put out three HUGE garbage cans every week & not one recycle bin. They have 3 children, we have none & I wonder how long in the future before their children (& others) will be sifting through the local landfill salvaging the throw aways of our culture.

We also live in a wonderful community that offers twice yearly dropoffs for hazardous waste, electronic components, & styrofoam. Last spring we took two truck loads to the drop off.

However, I must admit I am intimidated by composting. ??? I do have an online friend who does the worm compost. She loves it. I must confront this fear, don't you think?

:hi:

37. I'm truly blessed to have the mother that I do and she now gets
at least 45 mpg. and she loooooooves it.

I don't deal with too much hazardous waste but somewhere around here they do it once or twice a year.

I'm not scared of the worms (I'm the designated unwanted critter killer in the house) as much as I am worried about smelliness or flies. When I mention the worm thing to my live-in sweetie he gets this look of horror on his face. That's why I thought the Bokashi might be a good alternative. Just google it to get more info on either method. There are worm composting bins that you can buy or find instructions to make your own. The Bokashi thing is a tad harder to find. Kits seem kind of expensive but I thought these two sites were reasonable though I haven't been on them for quite some time.
