Her son is sick. Had massive diarrhea.
Took him to the Doctor there. Cost $2.50 for an office visit.
Took him to the pharmacy. Filled the prescription for $2, but then the pharmacist gave her son a shot that the doc had ordered for the infection. How weird is that?

But do know there are free/low cost sterilization programs. There seems to be a belief in injections in Mexico that can be detrimental to health - lots of poor/rural folks expect them when seeing a doctor and so children are often given vitamin shots that can abscess and cause worse problems than say the cold they had originally.

this is not a hostile reply, i am just wondering about one facet of the story. Seems to me a RXist here would be rich. Would not need to go to mex. for healthcare, could dance into any local hospital and be given the red carpet as "one of us".

5. My cousin goes across the border to see a heart specialist in Mexico

He's retired and he can't get an insurance company to cover his pre-existing heart condition. In the U.S., a private doctor wanted to send him for an EKG at about $1500 a pop and the regular doctor visits are $150. He found an extremely well-qualified heart specialist in Mexico who has studied both in Mexico and in European hospitals who charges about $200 for the same exam, including the doctor visit. And his presciption medication costs about 60% less. I don't know about a pharmacist giving injections, but if they were prescribed by the doctor and if the doctor's technician would perform the same function in the doctor's office in the U.S., why not? I think that treatment in Mexico is becoming a solution for increasing numbers of Americans who can't get insurance in the U.S. or who can't afford it. But I think you have to be very careful in choosing a doctor with strong credentials.
