Is Paul Hackett our next JFK?
This man has the goods--I see a bright future in him.
He IS the American dream personified.
Everyone needs to do what they can to get this young man in the spotlight.
He is a bright spot on a very dark horizon.

I think it is a little early for that kind of talk. Lets get Hackett elected to Congress and let him (and Obama) get some experience first.

27. I like Obama, but...
It is far too early for him, and I haven't seen him stand on his principles yet. He has gone along with the party leaders too often in his short tenure.

No, if you really want to see a killer ticket for '08, it would be:

Schweitzer (Gov. of Montana)/ Hackett

Two straight talking Democrats, who won't take any shit from the Republicans.

3. I'm not sure (although winning is obviously a good move)
He could easily be setting himself up for a stawide office, or at minimum as a state senator. Given time, he could be a very powerful voice even if he doesn't win and merely gets a close run.

succeeded in putting them on a pedestal. yes i like hackett, and last week i was very much into donating for a couple reason. grassroots across the nation support even a small place in ohio, and the man himself.

yet to declare him president material already. ah silliness

and i assure you, as soon as there is one thing he doesn't walk exactly the way group thinks he should, will cut him off at the knees

i think the bigger in the haskett story is how we a nation of dems can go to key races and influence, ergo, influence the whole

and yes, i too like haskett

6. Please don't call me silly--that is rude
I have read this young man's platform...his platform stands for what my America stands for.
I'm NOT putting him in the White House yet.
By the way...it is HACKETT, not Haskett.
My OP simply said, "IS he our next JFK".
Please note the subtlety that I did NOT write "Paul Hackett IS our next JFK".
World of difference.

12. Smeared?
Clark Hackett would be awesome. I would love to see them call these two weak on National Security!

They are two guys from meager beginnings who served their country long after it was required of them (NATO commander and someone who volunteered to go back to the military he had long left, to fight a war that he disagreed with, but wanted to protect his fellow soldiers). Lets hear republicans debate that!

20. They've tried swiftboating him already
:eyes: It's really quite pathetic what they do to war hero's. John McCain, John Kerry, Wesley Clark and now to the list Paul Hackett. Simply amazing. As was told on the "Daily show" during the 2004 republican convention coverage: Cheney was talking about how great our armed forces were and Stewart showed a picture of Kerry getting a medal and said: "only if they're not running against you. Then they're pussies." And it's true.

7. OK, OK, calm down, folks...
Before we start building bridges and statues in his honor like Alaska's Don Young, let's keep things in perspective. There's a BIG difference between a telegenic, clear-speaking, idealistic candidate with a clean record and an elected official who realizes in a big fucking hurry how Capitol Hill politics actually works, with all the partisan bullshit, double-dealing, compromises, back-stabbing, stealth legislation, et. al.

If he pulls this off, it'll be the biggest upset, I think, since Hillary Clinton got elected. But following up on that will be a tremendous challenge for Mr. Hackett, so let's just support him within reason and wait and see what he does in the House when he beats Schmidt.

Family values and dirty tricks always win districts like this. I know we're all excited for him, I am too, and yes, this race seems different somehow and we should be doing everything we can to help. Just don't be crushed when he loses.

Second of all, let's give him a few terms in office before we start the draft Hackett for president effort.

As far as I can tell he has every qualification to become a great politician. He's smart, articulate, military experience, and even has a law degree. I hope he goes all the way. If he can win in his district, he can win anywhere. That district is tough, Jesus would even have a problem in that district if he were running on the Dem ticket.

28. Anyone who says this is certainly not very intelligent

"The Iraqi people and government are grateful that we eliminated their brutal dictator. They are capable of running their own government and building a democracy. It won’t look like ours; nor should it. But in order for them to succeed, we must not withdraw our troops before the Iraqis are ready to stand on their own. "

He is just another "educated" American

http://koti.netplaza.fi/~findians/AntiWar/USEducated/educated.html

The Iraqis do not WANT AMERICANS THERE.

If Paul Hackett does not see that, he is BLIND.

who has sent almost all Democrat principles down the toilet?

(Check Obama's short term voting record in relation to speech at the Democrat Convention.)

Or just because you do not want a Republican winning?

Certainly a hard choice to make, as either way the American people LOSE.

"And too many liberals who opposed the war want to see the president’s Iraq policy fail."

How about this: "You don't have to be a tree-hugger to conserve energy."

So I guess they're pretty close.

JFK was from Mass, Hackett from the reddest part of Ohio. If Hackett was a pure enough liberal for DU he wouldn't have a chance.

Having read some of his statements on his website, it sounds like he's pretty good at relating liberal ideas to midwestern conservatives. It's a useful skill, we need it to convince people in the red states in the center of the country that voting dem is in thier best interest.

...assuming we're talking about the late President Kennedy, he ran his first campaign for Congress under the slogan "a fighting conservative," not "Proud to be a liberal."

Thems was different times, 1946 and all, so it's understandable. But you still shouldn't distort history.

41. Of course, I was referring to his 1960 acceptance speech.
How that's a distortion of history I don't know.

Perhaps you could have said that my view of history was short-sighted, that I began too late in JFK's career and should have looked to his earlier campaign, that this more expansive view of JFK's history would reveal closer parallels than simply looking at his presidential run/victory.

You could have said all of this, but you didn't. Instead, you said I "distorted" history. Now you look inaccurate--the very thing you should have been accusing me of.

Oh well, your fall from the soap box shouldn't be too far.
