Here are my perceptions. He was smooth as usual but I would like to see some changes in a few of his answers (see #2).
1. Would support the $87 B because of the need to support our troops, if allies would share the responsibility. Indicated that Bush has failed to get this sharing because he refuses to share with them decision-making authority, and no country can be expected to agree to this. 2. Couldn't answer the question on how he would calculate future costs. He skirted it by saying he can't say until he knows what other countries would pay. I think he needs to have a three or four point response ready to identify what costs he thinks are underestimated. 3. Good job of explaining how he believes the Patriot Act has some good provisions but threatens civil rights and liberties in others and should be changed. 4. When asked if Rummy should resign, he said "What we need is a new president, and the new president can appoint whom he wants. 5. When asked a follow up (the only dopey neocon question I heard), "Then why won't you allow him to appoint the federal judges he wants?", he nailed it by saying he has supported nominees who will enforce our laws and Constitution, but has a responsibility to oppose the lifetime appointment of people who don't. Ended with the charming "silk assassin" (do I have that Southern term right?) smile that could have meant, "no sweat" or could have meant "you're an idiot."
