Does Any One Know About CARE
the anti-poverty organization?

From what I see on their site and on Charity Navigator, they seem to be pretty cool, but I wanted to make sure they weren't some missionary or right wing front.

4. Is it religious?
Every year I get a catalog from World Vision...and you can 'buy' a goat for a family, books for a school, a medical clinic for a village and a whole bunch of other things. It's a nifty idea, good marketing and all, very appealing...but they're very religious. Rightwing too.

I don't want any child to 'have' to be religious to get food, so I'm looking for an alternative.

That's a rare statistic for a charitable organization. It demonstrates a direct willingness and ability to put dollars where they should go -- directly to the charitable purpose!

To answer you question, C.A.R.E. is not affiliated with any religion nor is C.A.R.E. a "front" for a rightwing organization. C.A.R.E. was founded immediately after World War II to aid Europeans . . read this: http://www.careusa.org/about/history.asp

edited to add: Also see, the parent organization: http://www.care.org

edited again to add : Are you aware that the charity that receives the largest amount of donations from Americans is a religion? Indeed. The Salvation Army is a religion. Not too many folks know that. And, there's more. The Salvation Army discriminates against homosexuals, ACTIVELY! And has been sued to give minimum wage to homeless workers who they, at times, house. Yup, think about it. Give a homeless person food and shelter but don't pay 'em for the work that they give . . . what's it called? Sound familiar? How about slavery? In any event, the lawsuit was won by the homeless who were represented by some pro bono (freebie) attorneys doing a good deed. The bottom line with me is I'd never give two cents to The Salvation Army

10. CARE is an old, trustworthy organization
it's been around for a long, long time feeding the hungry of the world without much publicity or fanfare.

11. I gave to them a few days after the tsunami. Seems like a good outfit,
and non-religious. And like others said, they've been around a long, long, time.
