So I've got friend who works for a major DC newspaper--Re: Roberts
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 06:54 PM by ithinkmyliverhurts
Three things:

1) Roberts' role in election 2000 and his donations are interesting.
2) His wife's role in anti-choice feminist fund raising/do-gooding is interesting (but the editorial harnesses have been put on).
3) Reporters are chomping at the bit to get back to Rove.

Unless something big breaks, something that has legs for the public, the SC thing will be vetted slowly, at the pace of the Senate.

But there are manifold avenues for the Rove story.

Finally, he lurks here at DU, though he's pretty libertarian in terms of political orientation. He admits that for all of the bullshit here, there have been a slew of stories where we (and by "we" I mean all of you who do the due diligence for the rest of us--and by "us" I mean me) are 4 steps ahead of everyone else.

Anyway, just thought you'd like to know that the Rove thing has these people smelling blood in the water.

right wing and can be used for simple explanations to politically naive friends. The big stories are that there is the possibility that Cheney needed to go beyond Plame. He needed to 'arrange' the war. He needed to interrupt CIA investigations into nuclear and wmd trafficking which Plame's unit was working on. And PNAC and Rumsfeld want to diminish the CIA in favor of their Military Intel so that the military can have more control. It seems there are too many good guys in the CIA.

Revenge is the story when it is necessary to keep it simple.
High level strategy is the story behind the story.

In other words, branches of our government appear to be at war with each other and what is also involved is a war between PNAC leaders and we citizens. PNAC is and has been playing a grand game of bluff which can be translated as cheating - as in theft, lies, rights, death.

We all need to graduate to the upper level of what appears to be happening here and learn.

Could it possibly be that Plame and her cohorts at Brewster Jennings were getting uncomfotably close to discovering something that the Bush/Cheney cartel would do just about ANYTHING to keep them from finding?

It was amazing to hear the talking heads even talking about the possiblity that Bush timed the SC nomination to distract from the Rove thing. I mean, its worked so many times in the past, to see the Rovian Shuffle being disrupted seems outright surreal.

I just got back from my barber and she said she had voted for bush but won't vote republican next time and thinks it will be a long time before another republican president is elected (and I live in Raleigh NC). The Rove thing has big legs and that's why the dems need to play this smart and keep the media attention on the scandal as much as possible.

believe that the Rove/Cheney story will (or should be) the biggest story ever about corruption and how far people will go when they are in power. Tell him the real story is in what went on in the energy task force meetings that Cheney is so afraid of. That story would blow the lid off in Wash and I think both sides know it.

No kidding! Cheney and his oil company cronies were secretly carving up Iraqi oil fields as far back as two months after Bush's first "inauguration" in March 2001.

17. They all want so much more than Rove.
Rove is toast. He lied to the grand jury, it appears, about speaking with Cooper. I guess he'll really try to parse his way out of it.

But what's going to catch on is the memo on AF1. Who saw it, who said what, and DID THE PRESIDENT KNOW ABOUT ANY OF IT. They're not looking for co-conspirator, illegalities, etc; they just want confirmation that the chimp knew something was up.

Libby is the biggest mark; he leads to Cheney. My understanding is that people want to see Cheney go down FAR MORE than the chimp.

12. Dear John, No back alley abortions, got it? Poor women will have no
options, while rich women will always be able to fly to switzerland and take care of their republican indiscretions.

Let's think about abortion laws when we're willing to jail the father of the "fetus", too. Until then, you men have no business telling us what to do with our bodies, or what to believe. Until then, it's purely a social device to keep women dependent.

As long as I have to endure 3 viagra commercials/hour, you're sure as hell going to allow abortions, and planned parenthood. You can't have it both ways.

I'm going to assume you're not going to try to repeal votes for women, right? Then, you'll have to leave the 70% approval of Roe v Wade alone. Let's reform the ethics of this administration, instead of trying to reform women. And let's indict anyone who lied to us.

Thanks,

From my side, the 51%

22. Interesting
"They are chomping at the bit to get back at Rove"

Why?

Because they actually admit to themselves how rotten to the core this admin is and the damage it's doing to the country?

Or just because it's a hot story?

Later you say they are whores. Are they whores with a heart of gold? Because a few million souls are depending on them to not abandon the biggest story they could ever tell..the whole truth about these crooks and liars.

Or only because it involves the press? Do they finally get that no matter how nice those paychecks may be, being manipulated for "access" by a rotten to the core gang that's ruining the country just ain't that cool?
I'm hoping that just aren't willing to take one for the team like Judy Miller.

It's a good story; scandal.

I wish it was that their zeal was tied to their obligation to their job. But it's not. They're whores, like I said. Taking down Rove, and others who are bigger, is simply a game.

What amazes me are the editors. They really keep a short leash on certain stories. The biggest scandal of all would be a full-length outing of the lazy, materialistic mainstream press that really run this country.

But now I'm going to start sounding like Bob Somerby.

29. Do they know that Roberts was a Registered Lobbyist
who spent $80,000 helping Bush get elected in 2004? Or that it appears that his lobbying activities took place after he became a judge?

Lobbyists Bankrolling Politics
Bush gets nearly four times as much as Kerry

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2004 — More than 1,300 registered lobbyists have given slightly more than $1.8 million to President George W. Bush over the last six years, according to a Center for Public Integrity study comparing the donations of all registered lobbyists from 1998 through March 2004. Sen. John Kerry received $520,000 from 442 lobbyists during the same period.

Such numbers account for a significant percentage of those who ply the influence game. In fact, the lobbyists who donated to Bush have represented about 6,000 clients; those who gave to Kerry, approximately 3,000 clients. Combined, these figures add up to more than half of all the companies that hire lobbyists, according to the Senate Office of Public Records. The SOPR says that there are currently 24,000 lobbyists registered to represent 15,000 clients.

Registered Lobbyists Appointed to Bush's Transition Teams and Their Activity

with Libby. Here's the deal, and the only one your boss is going to get on the Roberts nomination:

* Bush appointees must recuse themselves from cases involving Bush Admin. officials - there is a clear conflict of interest here.

* all SCOTUS appointments wait until the Plamegate prosecutions are completed - nobody would have let Richard Nixon appoint a Supreme Court Justice after the Watergate investigation began. This is more serious than Watergate.

That is all - The Real Deal Democrats. :kick:

They are not saying much about Roberts' background. Everyone keeps saying he is squeaky clean and there is nothing there. I did feel a little better when I learned he is Roman Catholic instead of a "born again". At least I am assuming as much since NBC news reported he went to an all boy Catholic school. I hope he is not Opus Dei or something.

But he is only 50--that is what really bothers me. He will have a long long time to profoundly change our country. And because he is brilliant, as time goes by other justices will follow his lead.

47. Here is a little more information on this guy
<snip>

Yet those who know Roberts say he, unlike Souter, is a reliable conservative who can be counted on to undermine if not immediately overturn liberal landmarks like abortion rights and affirmative action. Indicators of his true stripes cited by friends include: clerking for Rehnquist, membership in the Federalist Society, laboring in the Ronald Reagan White House counsel's office and at the Justice Department into the Bush years, working with Kenneth Starr among others, and even his lunchtime conversations at Hogan & Hartson. "He is as conservative as you can get," one friend puts it. In short, Roberts may combine the stealth appeal of Souter with the unwavering ideology of Scalia and Thomas.

62. We need to get him on that point.
They want to pass Roberts off as a 'non-extremist', non-idealogue, but Operation Rescue is about extreme as you can get. No lawyer would work for them unless they completely supported Op. Rescue's goals.

64. That says it all!
The WH and this administration have become transparent, predictable. Fools. They actually thought their shit could go on forever without anyone doing a damn thing about it. Their ARROGANCE will be their downfall.

60. Thanks for keeping us informed.
It's time for Americans who really love their country to take it back from the clutches of an evil, lying regime.

66. the story is Cheney. And Bush knew becaue he visited a criminal
lawyer to see how much trouble could be made for him personally...

the story is Cheney and Haliburton selling nuke components around the world illegally which Valerie Plame was investigating.

Cheney's cabal and the boyz are and were pro-proliferation

Valerie's job was to stop proliferation.

If you had already been fined 10 million dollars for selling nuke components illegally while CEO of Halliburton, and Valerie was about to find out more of where you sold......and your name was Dick wad
you would have the boys expose her....and gloat over it in the oval office with dummy and rover.

If Fitz can pull that together...we'll all have a big

GOTCHYA!

67. BTW, Liver hurts ya - we have the proof of the offshore companies
he used,...so if you and your "friend" are interested, I'll post the links.

He might also talk to Sibil Edmonds who KNOWS a lot more about Cheney
and company illegalities. And we have a thread on that yoo.

Tell your bud to look up the Azberjain Chamber of Commerce and who was on the membership prior to the 2000 election.

Cheney, his daughter, Armitage, Khalilizad, and a lot of Texans who are friends of the dummy...

The war in Iraq was not just about Iraq oil.

It's about the oil in the Caspian Sea and more pipelines.

And Azberjain borders the Caspian...which is also why he wants to attack Iran...which borders the Caspian.

Their theme song is "What I did for Oil"
