8. Of three catholics on the supremes
two are believed to be Opus Dei? An organization of, supposedly, 80,000 members out of a world population of more than a billion catholics?

How likely is that?

But the question I'm raising: Is he in any way connected to Opus Dei, an ultra right wing Chatholic cult organization? How do we find out? Ask Scalia?

12. I don't think we do find out
Unless somebody sees him going in one of thier buildings or a former member outs him, I doubt he'd be dumb enough to admit membership. He needs to fundie base to get through congress and they love a good Catholic conspiracy. Opus Dei seems weirder than anything Jack Chick could come up with in a fever dream and membership would cause a lot of people to him in a more sinister light.

11. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Some of our friends here at DU are in deep denial about the seriousness of the Roberts nomination. I hope they snap out of it soon because we have a lot of concurrent battles to fight.

13. What Is So Bad About Opus Dei?
A friend of mine went on a rant about them one time and was suprised I had never heard of that particular brand of evil. He told me to go to their website and see for mysely how diabolical they are.

So I did.

I couldn't find anything wrong with them or what they openly strive to do. Is there more than they admit to? I only ask because it appears anyone can be in it if they want to and nothing that I see as undesirable comes of it.

15. Off the top of my head
They're striving to take Catholism back to the Middle Ages, and the rest of us with them. Also, they have the most misogynist attitudes toward women -- the ladies have to enter through a separate door in their "facilities."

18. There Is Not A Word Of Any Thing Like That
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 02:31 PM by ThomWV
At their website. In fact there is not one single tawdry thing I could find anywhere on their website. Even more than that, it was not at all apparent they were much more than a loosely knit group with similar views on how one should lead their life.

How is that any different than any other religious group?

I really looked, because my friend was so adamat that they were evil personified. I couldn't find jack shit wrong with them, any more than any other zelots. They certainly weren't trying to impose any of their views on anyone.

Basically all they said was that to be a member here is what you had to do: Devote your life to doing as much good as you could and doing all of the good you could, and doing it in the name of Jesus. Sign the pledge to do that, no matter what your activity, and you would be in. As far as I could see you didn't even necessairly have to be a Catholic.

So what's the big deal? What country have they overtrown, which poor have they deprived, who have they burned at the stake?

19. That whole Franco thingy back in Spain.
It's where they blossomed. They're Fascists. Or at least heavily identified with Fascism.

That is, or used to be, a "bad" thing.
