Question about "Red Friday"
Got this e-mail from a rethug I work with. The whole thing reeks of yellow-ribbon magnet syndrome. I wanted DU's take, and if my nose is right, to know if there's any Red Friday counter-movement. Dunno how "new" this idea is, but I haven't exactly noticed overwhelming amounts of red attire on Fridays (that I can recall, anyway).

So here's the message (and I checked Snopes, already):

Well,,,,this seems like a good idea since the Lib's are always blaming
America first.

This was sent to me from a Mom whose son just entered the military.

RED FRIDAY

You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why.....

The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are
not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions
are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want
to recognize that Americans support our troops.

Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is
starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is
over, that every red -blooded American who supports our young men and
women, WEAR SOMETHING RED. Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's
see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red
much like a home football game at a University.

If every one of us share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers,
friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the
USA will be covered in RED - and let our troops know there are many
people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday
when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example.....

Wear RED on Fridays.

I sent this out to everyone on my email list, hopefully, you will too.

Wear Red on Fridays ..

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!!! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE,
BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED.
GOD BLESS AMERICA ! ! !

1. I have three questions
1: how much red do I have to wear? are socks OK? a tie? or do I have to wear a whole red suit like i'm Shaq or something?

2: I saw President Bush last friday, and he was wearinga blue tie, as always. Does this mean that he doesn't support the troops?

2: say I get shot or hit by some sort of improvised explosive device, does my blood count?

3. the normal idiotic rational of a repug. I support the troops but not
the Administration. You can do both. How better to support the troops by not allowing a Neocon send them on crusades for ideology and oil!!!

6. This Friday - new abuse photos to be released. We should all wear BLACK!
Red will only emphasize the bloody brutality US is using.

7. Thanks, everyone for the feedback. It is as I expected. I responded
to my co-worker with this:

"you know, I love the idea of supporting the troops, but I just can't get into nontangible or passive action. Besides, this e-mail idea is 3 years old and hasn't caught on. How about instead, each Friday we:

have a moment of silence for the 1768 dead American troops; or,

donate our Starbucks money to an organization that helps equip our troops with the resources they need but aren't getting, like body armor; or,

take 20 minutes to write an e-mail to our reps in Congress asking them to inquire as to The Downing Street Memo to ensure that we're doing the right thing over there."

It's not begging conflict, and it just might drop a pebble into that calm pond of a mind that some of these folks seem to have. I know she won't follow through with anything I've suggested, but I got my talking points in, I guess.

8. wha about other colors?
Y'know, I think we need to wear all the other colors of the rainbow on Friday as well, to protest the exclusion of gays in the military.

9. Everytime I see this email, I suggest doing this
"Reply All" with:

Did you know that the pro-gay, anti-family movements has a "Wear red on Friday if you support gay rights" policy.

If you wear red on Friday, it means you love gay people.

12. hmm, so...
"I guarantee that it will not be long before the
USA will be covered in RED - and let our troops know there are many
people thinking of their well-being."

while our troops are dodging suicide bombers left and right, they'll feel better because a bunch of chickenhawks in rural America are wearing red?? that makes soooooo much sense
