The Right White Man!
I've been checking out various reactions to the Roberts pick from the right wing, and came across this winner from Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/005/853sknln.asp

WITH THE SUPREME COURT PICK of John Roberts, George W. Bush rose to the occasion.

The occasion was an opportunity to reshape the Supreme Court. Bush seized the opportunity, in two ways: He moved the Court a solid step to the right (to speak vulgarly), and he elevated its quality. It's true that Roberts is a Rehnquist, not a Scalia or a Thomas. He'll be a little more incremental, a little more cautious, than some of us rabid constitutionalists will sometimes like. But he is a conservative pick, and a quality pick--and, to my surprise, a non-PC, non-quota pick.

The format of my blog does not currently permit me to respond directly there, so let me just say, thank goodness. I mean the voice of the White Male was in danger of being drowned out by two woman and one black. Previously white males only controlled 2/3 or 66.67% of the court. With this new pick, white males will control 77.77% of the court, and I think we are all happy about that.

Unless, of course, you aren't a white male.

Bryant

2. Maybe we should actually have a non-white male presidential
nominee ourselves before we go off on others. How about VP then? Ok, how about speaker of the house, or maybe a governor, or maybe....

4. We did have a female VP candidate
And I'd guess we have had several governor ships held by non white males.

6. Yeah, I know, back in 84 when the party gave-up
what do we have now? Am I the only one sick of hearing all the talk from white males leading the Dem party about how important it is to advance minorities, yet it is always white males that seem to get the big positions...and if not a white male, then a white female (how diverse!).

7. Is that better or worse than Kristol saying, in effect,
"Thank goodness President Bush didn't advance a minority or a woman"?

9. Is what Kristol said better or worse than what any...
southern Dem did in the 60s? Same response you gave me. What the hell is your point? That because we can find something worse to point at, than what we do is fine? Not be me it isn't.

Frankly, we oughta let loose a big sigh of relief that yet again another minority wasn't appointed a Repub, since they are the only people that seem to do that (Reagan, Bush I, Bush II). In fact, didn't Clinton appoint a white male? Hell, look at Bush's cabinent vs. Clinton's.

When is our party going to stop talking shit all the time and actually do some promoting of minorities (other than white woman)?

10. It's about the same
Where are those southernn Dems now?

I'm not sure I agree that Dems do not nominate minorities to positions; but i'm certainly willing to concede that they could do better.

Incidently if I had the opportunity to nominate someone for high position (and I couldn't nominate myself), I would strongly consider nominating a minority. But, thus far, my life has not afforded me that opportunity.

3. Just wondering, two things.
What happened to all that "Bush will pick a woman" BS that the right and the media were speculating about.

And, what the fuck are this guys qualifications, anyway? He's barely been a judge. Just looks like he has had a career of being a party tool.

5. He's ok. White males don't need high qualifications or experience
Look who is President and he has fucked up the world. Remember, for all the problems in this country and the world, white males have dominated control of laws, the courts, the governments, the militaries...either directly or indirectly. so what's new? Also remember, it was not the Black Caucus that got us into the war in Iraq and it WAS the Black Caucus who stood up against the 2000 election but couldn't any "white males," to challenge the vote disinfranchisement that took place then.

11. And if he had nominated a minority...
...people would refer to him/her as a sellout or an Uncle Tom anyway so what is the difference?

And being non-PC, non-quota is not synonomous with being a white male.
