This is what you want, this is what you get
It was a near miracle that Bush** did not get to appoint a Supreme Court judge during his first term.

It was a virtual certainty he'd appoint at least one in his second.

Americans really must not care that the court is about to take a hard right turn. Dems can really do nothing to stop it, that little agreement that was reached a couple months ago is absolutely meaningless, and the Republicans in the senate will take sheer delight in driving that fact home.

So, this is what the country wanted, this is what they get. I for one am going to expend not another ounce of worry about it, I don't need a fucking abortion and apparently the folks who might don't give a shit about it. This is one battle we cannot win. I've never been one to get too involved in impossible causes.

The silver lining here is that once America gets what it "wanted", it is going to be very unhappy, and especially unhappy with the Republican party. It's too bad that they hang on to power just long enough to fuck up the court. Pathetic.

I realize that I'm merely ranting here and that I'm going to engender a bunch of pollyanna responses about keeping the fight, etc, etc, etc.

Sorry, I prefer to fight battles that have some, say at least a 1% chance, of being won. This battle doesn't qualify. So, all I can do is say "this is what you want, this is what you get" to the 55% of white women who voted for Bush**. Bon Appetit!

1. Okay for you, but once you lose something how do you get it back?
We can't just think of our wants and needs, we've got to look out for those who come after us. This is going to affect generations of Americans--we've got to fight for them too.

2. I wonder..
... just what it is you think we can do?

Filibuster? It won't happen, but if it does, the nuclear option WILL BE INVOKED, you can absolutely count on it.

3. Here's what I think...
Keep pushing the whole Rove debacle--eventually we're going to find out that the elections were a sham. Once this administration is no longer legitimate they shouldn't get to nominate Supreme Court Justices. It's a long shot, but I'm not giving up!

4. This is the only battle that we can win at this time
And as important as all of our other concerns are, we must focus on the one we can win. We must push Rove/Plame/DSM for all its worth. This is how we bring down *Co.
In fact, this is so important that I would strongly urge that we not get involved in any online poll or discussions about Roberts. And if we must, than the discussion centers around his views on R/P/D. We must be relentless and we must not give them anywhere to hide on this matter.

5. Push Rove? Yes. But this one is a done deal.
Sometimes it takes something of seismic proportions to awaken the idiot sheeple. Roberts may be the thing that does it, when he's the old white guy vote to overturn Roe. We'll lose this one. The swing of the pendulum may be inevitable, but it has to reach its apogee. This may be it.

7. Exactly..
... and since we really cannot stop this particular pendulum, let's move on to things we can really do something about :)

6. This isn't only about abortion
Do you give a shit about the evironment or civil rights. If you don't then you will be just fine. If you do: you are just as f*cked as the women who may need an abortion someday.

8. It's not a matter..
.... of what I give a shit about. Clearly, anyone reading between the lines can see what I'm really saying. I'm PISSED OFF that we find ourselves in this position.

And I'm resigned to the ABSOLUTE FACT, that there is not one god dammed thing we can do about it. This guy will be confirmed, so you might as well get on to the next fight, this one is already lost.

10. You can't give up!
The Rove/Libby/Cheney...Bush Traitorgate is the opening we've been waiting for. It's connected to all of the dastardly things this administration has undertaken over the past 4 1/2 years. We've got to expose their evil underside to the trusting "public" and the rest will fall into place.

11. Oh trust me..
... I'm not giving up, ever.

I'm just giving up on this supreme court appointment. There is nothing we can do to stop Roberts from being confirmed.

Rove/Plame I believe has a strong potential to do great damage to the Bush** administration. But not before he has done the great damage of installing yet another wingnut on the SC.

12. It is a matter of what you give a shit about.
This appointment could affect the environment, the media, civil rights and a whole lot of other things you care about. I understand your position. I for one hope you are wrong. Maybe we can fight this, I am not ready to give up just yet. I think there are a lot of moderate Reps that aren't ready to vote for an anti-choice Supreme Court Justice. I will be doing what I can to influence my two Senators. I hope you are willing to do the same. This isn't only about abortion.

14. You really think...
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 09:01 AM by sendero
... there will be more than 1 or 2 Republican votes against this guy?

I don't think there will be a single one. Not one. We'll just have to wait and see.

The only real question in my head right now is how to make the most political hay out of their choice. That might mean doing a filibuster and forcing the pukes to go nuclear. I'm pretty sure they will pay a price at the polls if they go nuclear, the question is will we pay a price for being "obstructionist". I really can't make the calculation.

17. We all knew this was going to happen...
and this guy would be an ugly evil rethug bastard. It is sad and frustrating and I have to say that this fight is an uphill battle since * & Co will continue to push these kind of assholes into positions of power no matter how much we fight it. I hate to say it but I agree that this probably isn't a battle that can be won right now.

Rove is the battle that we have a very good chance of winning...and perhaps is what will bring this filthy house of cards down....very soon.
