Wow, instead of Rove, Clinton and Liberman are more concerned about...
Hidden sex in Grand Theft Auto!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050715/en_nm/media_sex_dc

WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - Two high-profile U.S. senators, Joseph Lieberman and Hillary Rodham Clinton, are incensed over pornographic content "hidden" in the popular video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," and are demanding action from either the government or the game's maker.

The content can be unlocked by using the "Hot Coffee" code modification widely available on the Internet. By installing the modification, gamers can have their drivers find different girlfriends in the game who will have a "cup of hot coffee" -- a euphemism for sex -- with them.

A spokesman for the game's maker, Rockstar Games Inc., said the "Hot Coffee" modification was the unauthorized work of people in the "modder community" -- the group of intense gamers who often add content to games.

<snip>

"Sen. Clinton is a fine lawyer and undoubtedly knows that her proposal is unconstitutional," he said in a statement. "The senator's proposal is politically savvy but will do nothing to help parents make informed choices about the video games their children play. In fact, by turning the voluntary video game ratings system into a cudgel of government censorship, Sen. Clinton's proposal ironically would likely lead to the abandonment of the ratings system."

1. Simple solution
Parents check the ratings and decide if it's for their kids. Problem solved. Why do parents need gov to raise their kids? I noticed that in the 90's.

It's legal for 17 year olds to have sexual intercourse in NY State.

36. Unbelievable.
You'd think Dems would know better than try to babysit us.

I like video games, even some of the violent ones, but some of them are not right for kids. That's the parents' responsibility. Sheesh! Besides, I would be more worried about the violence of Grand Theft Auto than sex.

My upbringing taught me that sex was evil and violence neutral. I am not the violent type, which is good, but teaching me that sex was evil suppressed natural tendencies and kept me stuck at prepubescence in some ways. It's not a good way to raise kids.

5. The DLC is what is WRONG with the Dem party.
Crap like this is almost criminal. They are distracting us from issues that really mean something - DSM, Plame leak, et. al., to focus on video games.

I used to like Hillary - what the hell happened to her? She was a liberal a long time ago...but now she is just another repub lite. I didn't notice her talking face in the awesome hearings on Reids Amendment on Friday...

The DNC is getting another 10.01 contruibution today from me - the .01 is to show support for Howard Dean and his worthy goal to give the party back to the People. Grassroots is where they must focus. We need to show they don't need the corporate blood money.

It was a mistake to walk away from the people's base in the 90's - and start groveling at the feet of the corporations.

the whole Tipper Gore getting songs banned from the radio thing back in the eighties.

Like "Hell is for Children" by Pat Benatar. There are people a few years younger than me who've never heard this excellent song about child abuse BECAUSE they had it stripped from the radio play-lists. Not because they didn't like the song, but they didn't like the title.

More stupidity from the nanny brigade. They should trust Americans to make good decisions and stop trying to protect them from meaningless crap like this.

Either get on board with the DSM and Plame Leak news, or go the hell away...

9. I disagree wholeheartedly, and here's why....
I think Senators Clinton and Lieberman are right to be concerned about this.

Our children are being exposed to too much sex, violence, etc right now. And the old argument of "if you don't like it, turn it off" doesn't work anymore.

For example, I have my 10-year old cousin with me for the summer. And sometimes, she gets on the computer to email her mother. And sometimes, in the course of emailing her mother, a pop-up ad might come up on the computer, of some half-naked woman or something. I don't want her exposed to that kind of stuff.

And I disagree with you saying "Instead of Rove, Clinton & Lieberman are concerned about....."

We are smart enough to be able to do more than one thing at a time. Just because Clinton and Lieberman are focusing on this, doesn't mean they are not concered about Rove. Hillary was at the press conference about Rove with Kerry the other day.

This was a hack that was specifically done by a few people to make that appear. I.e., if you go buy the game, it is NOT going to show up unless you hack it to do so.

Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 02:44 PM by danalytical
Kids shouldn't be anywhere near this game anyways. IF they are, its a failure of the parents. Let adults have their entertainment. Should we ban SouthPark since kids might be attracted to it because its a cartoon? Just because GTA is a video game doesn't mean its a childrens toy.

Hillary and Leiberman are looking for brownie points from religious conservatives and soccer moms. Its despicable, but at least if they gain a little more support for the Democratic party I guess some good can come of it.

Did you mean that I assume they "aren't concerned"?

Because guess what? They probably aren't. This stinks of politics to me. It's entirely possible and even more probable that politics is the reason.

Here are some things to remember.

Hillary Clinton is poitioning herself as a moderate. She rallies the base one day, and then goes and appeals to conservatives the next day. She probably figures that if she gets enough issues that draw people from both sides of the aisle, that she will win in "08". She may a little trouble with the Liberal side of the Democrats that will certainly criticize her for jumping the fence so often, but she knows in the end they will vote for her and not a Republican.

and BTW
Bill Clinton certainly DID inhale. And I like him more because of it.

As you can see from those questions, they do not compare. They are completely different issues.

It's like banning R rated movies because children can get adults to buy them a ticket!!!

But I humbly refer you to the following Mark Twain quote:

Also, judging by the situation you describe, you really should investigate a pop-up blocker. There are plenty of good free ones out there. Or browse with Firefox instead of ie.

25. It does not
That is a load of shit. I'm on the computer all the time. My business is to promote tourism web sites, primarily. I never, and I mean never, have sex pop-ups or accidentally stumble into any other kind of sex ads or web sites. If you do, then they didn't get there accidentally.

The worst I get is spam email, but they don't do anything about that because corporations want to be able to spam you. Besides, a good spam filter will block almost all of it, and she shouldn't be opening anything she isn't familiar with anyway. That's how people get email viruses.

Since they need a "moral values" issue, they might want to consider the DNA rape kit testing backlog, or focusing on molesters instead of statutory rape, or even helping teen fathers become better parents. People have never believed books, magazines, music, movies or video games turns their children into criminals. This is a complete waste of time and just helps to label us as the nanny party, which is why we lose.

In the case of these GTA games, they're rated M for Mature. Little kids aren't supposed to use them.

Banning content because of parent irresponsibility is wrong. The parent's job is to check out what their kids are exposed to, not make all of us adopt the standards of what's appropriate for a 10 year old.

we oppose politicians supposedly on our side resorting to censorship tactics, we're haters?

Sorry, that doesn't fly. Video games are an art form, as much as some would hate to admit it. GTA may not be 'da Vinci, but the fact is, it's protected as free expression, just as shit for Mary was protected. People may find this offensive. I personally find Pat Robertson offensive but his hateful ramblings are also protected.

And the game has a warning AS IT IS - It's rated M (Mature 17+). Any adult that doesn't supervise what games or movies his or kids are watching has no right to bitch about the content. It's complete laziness on the parents' part.

Video games have clear labels, just like movies.

Not a hack. Think of the game as a "platform" around which the user community can build whatever they want. I don't play it nor would I let my ten year old but it's just a stepping stone on the path to "real" virtual reality.

Younger people tend to be more tech savvy and more inclined to understand and embrace technical/cultural change. The mod is just a manifestation of the real world via sexuality, which is everywhere already.

They are pandering to older more conservative voters who are too busy making money, ie: working on specialized tasks, to be sophisticated enough to embrace change.

They must not trust that the House of Bush is coming down and they're hedging their bets. They still think we have elections.

52. Treason in the White House, War, terrorists,
Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggert, Rev. Moon and their ilk running America and they are worried about sex?! I am very disappointed in both of them for such.

They should be helping get our country back ASAP! We don't have time for pretending to be the Religious Right!

53. pornographic content "hidden"
The drivers can already get a prostitute to do them, all to the sounds of the car squeeking on its shocks.
