My Rove LTTE made it into the paper today :^)
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 12:14 PM by GreenPartyVoter
I will be monitoring to see what kind of "rebuttal" to it gets posted. Will let you know if any show up.

Coolest part about this is that my nana opened the paper and read the letter this morning. And she was shocked and pleased to see that it was from me.

1. Did you put it up on DU yet?
Love to see it... I'm just finishing one myself.

2. Yes But I can put it up again. They formatted it a bit differently, but it
is still ok.

Hiding something?

There are many questions surrounding the issue of who blew CIA agent Valerie Plame's cover in retaliation for her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, revealing as forgeries the Niger yellow cake uranium documents that provided "proof" for pushing forward with the Iraq war.

For example, are these forgeries what was meant by the Downing Street memo which stated that the "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy" of going to war in Iraq?

Who authorized the revelation of Wilson's wife as an undercover weapons of mass destruction operative for the CIA, thus putting her mission and dozens of other operatives at risk?

Why did former Attorney General John Ashcroft remove himself from the leak investigation? If the leak indeed came from a member or members of his staff will President Bush, who promised honor and integrity in the White House, stand by his word and "deal" with the person who created the leak as he promised way back in 2003?

Why is the White House changing its story from "it's ridiculous" to think that Karl Rove is involved in the leak, that they've "made it very clear, he was not involved, that there's no truth to the suggestion that he was" to "This is an ongoing investigation at this point. The president directed the White House to cooperate fully with the investigation, and as part of cooperating fully, that means "we're not going to be commenting on it while it is ongoing."

Have they been hiding something for two years, or does Bush have so little control over what his staff does, including Rove, a man his own father once fired for leaking a negative story about Bush supporter Robert Mosbacher to none other than columnist Bob Novak, who features in the Plame story as well?

3. Hey, wanna proof this for me?
LTTE:

I’ve quite had it.

I’ve been a registered Republican since I was of voting age. Let’s just say it’s been a little while since then… and now I’m furious. I’m a Republican because I believe in many real Republican and Conservative values. I believe in fiscal responsibility. People’s right to privacy, and I believe in individual state’s rights because that is what a Republic provides for. I also bother to listen to what people have to say and weigh their opinions in light of our mutual and respective views… even if we disagree.
But what I have been seeing lately is nothing short of abhorrent.
The divisions in this country are suppurated lesions of willful ignorance. There is no doubt that today; our country is more politically divided than ever.
In fact I saw a poll just this last January from CNN that reports that the “nation is split over whether Bush is a uniter or a divider”… you heard it right… 48% said he was a ‘uniter’, 48% said he was a ‘divider’, and 4% were ‘undecided’. http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/01/19/poll

What’s that tell ya?

Well now we have the ultimate psychological experiment… (Nearly) half of the country pointing to the 500 lb Gorilla in the room and shouting “LOOK!”, and the other (nearly) half saying, “I’m not falling for that one! You’re obviously trying to confuse the issue.” Right before the gorilla decides that the latter (nearly) half is ‘fair game’.
The harder either ‘side’ pushes, the less likely the other ‘side’ is to listen… no matter whom the gorilla in the room is sitting on.

So here’s my gorilla;

We, the people of the United States of America, owned a CIA asset before and as of July 9th 2005. This particular asset was directly responsible for brokering the sales of items that might be used for the production of WsMD. It was instrumental in our ability to gather intelligence on bad nasty people who wanted big mean weapons. This particular asset, named ‘Brewster-Jennings and Associates’, had been around long enough to establish contacts in foreign countries, get leads on who from and who to items were going, and probably a great deal more. (I’d know if I had some security clearance.)
As of the Fourteenth of July in the Year of our Lord 2003, that asset was irrevocably compromised. As a result, we lost all of the contacts, we lost all of the informants, and we lost all of the intelligence gathering capability in the field that Mrs. Plame/Wilson helped to cultivate as an asset. We lost one of the things that help to keep America, and the World, safe.
Brewster-Jennings and Associates is gone.
They used to keep track of where WsMD (Weapons of mass destruction) might be built and by whom.
I do not feel safer now that one of our own has compromised this asset.
Whoever is responsible for the destruction of this critical component of our National Security should be made to face the American public. And they, with full knowledge of the offense, should judge him.

These are irrefutable facts; someone revealed the identity of a CIA operative. As a result, the United States of America lost a valuable national security asset.

Period.

The facts are the facts. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, they are not entitled to their own facts. The facts here tell a very real story of treason at the highest levels of our government. The facts are quite insistent that our ‘War on Terror’ is a miserable failure. Our facts are quite clear in the assertion that Iraq was no military threat to us of any kind. The facts have made visible that our invasion of Iraq may have been planned as early as 1997. The facts tell us that our administration is out of touch with reality. And the facts tell us very clearly that half of America thinks all of America stands united.

To me, that means that at least half of America isn’t paying any attention.

-Dr. E

5. Do your local papers print long letters? Do you want to have
a mixed informal and formal voice? Right now this has the feel of a blog editorial because of that mixed voice. Is that the feel you want it to have? (It sounds like an editorial might, but I am not sure if LTTEs follow that style or not. This is my first time of getting one published and I went with a more formal feel. Except for the phrase "blowing her cover". That's slang, I guess.

And you do what I do, whis is to put ellipses when you are typing out a pause in your thought processes. My stories are littered with them. *g* But they need to be turned into the correct commas and periods now.

Aside from that, this is a good letter and I really love the first 2 lines of the last paragraph. That's perfect!

4. If mine gets chosen, I suspect it will be in a week or so.
I live in a red state & my newspaper has always leaned Republican, particularly with this administration. I've noticed in the last six months or so that there have been more & more anti-Bush LTTE's. Because I stopped reading it around the time the Iraq invasion began, I have no way of knowing when the tide began to shift. There have been days when I've seen 2 or 3 anti-Bush LTTE's on the same page, but I suspect there are so many anti-Bush letters that the Republican editors choose to space them out in order to lessen the impact.

6. At least they are printing those letters. I would not be surprised that
there are papers out there who do not print them, or who only let one slip through now and then so as to appear "fair and balanced".

10. Good one! And in Texas, no less. *g* (I know Houston is liberal
but it's a major statewide paper, yes? Bangor Daily covers most of the state of Maine, though folks in the southern and western parts may not pick it up.)

11. All I could think is whether Poppy reads it or not
it's a pretty big paper..I got a copy of it, very prominent, I was impressed. My very first letter to the Editor. I did not even think they would read it to be honest with you and they they called me and ask for my permission.

Have not received any counter arguments to the column, it is early we shall see.

9. Yep. I was inspired by Skinner's talking points when I wrote it but added
the DSM question after reviewing a few threads by some other mighty smart DUers.

And yes, I posted it in the activist forum and also checked in under the "published" thread.

13. That is so cool.
I got a call from my local newspaper yesterday and mine will be printed in 7-10 days. It is so great we can all get together and hopefully have an effect. Keep writing those letters and I hope more get published.

15. Excellent! We need to keep an eye on these papers for freeper rebuttals as
well as whether or not the paper's journalists are covering the DSM/Plame issues.

And also keep on the media to do their job.
