Have you checked for Unclaimed Property? I found some for me!
Here's a link to search all the states where you have lived, or had parents or realtives living that could have $$ turned over the the State as unclaimed.

http://www.unclaimed.org/mainframe.asp?VisitorType=owner

I heard this on the program The Dolans Unscripted show this morning, and ran a check. I found 3 properties listed in a State where we used to live that I can claim. I just printed off the form and will get it notarized on Monday.

It is worth your time to at least check!

1. Congratulations! Yes, everyone should check from time to time...
A couple years ago, I was fooling around on the unclaimed property site for my state. I was just putting in names of friends and family when I found an unclaimed insurance check for my wife's brother was being held by the state. I called him to let him know. It wasn't much ($$$), but in this day and age, every little bit helps!

5. GREAT! I suspect no one is going to get wealthy from what they
find, but the amounts listed are supposed to range from $5.00 to over $100,000. Whatever it is, if you find anything, all it's going to cost is a 37 cent stamp.

Good Luck to everyone!

a postage stamp. My late father-in-law left less than a hundred dollars in unclaimed stock dividends that we didn't know he had. It isn't worth our while to try to collect the money because my husband and his two sisters would each have to provide notarized documentation that they are his heirs, and the cost of the notary service is as much as the money turned over to the state.

Putting together the paperwork that needs to be filed in order to collect is time consuming and, when the amount is small, possibly not cost-effective.

10. My bank will notarize any doc FREE. Have you ever checked with
your bank? I never lived in Calif. but banks did this for me in PA, SC, TX and GA. Next time you're in your bank, ask, or at least give them a call.

As long as you have an account of any kind at the bank, that's all that's required. It's considered a courtesy to their customers.

account, the notary service would be free. Otherwise its $25.00 a signature.

I know a woman who is a "travelling" notary. She comes to the client. She charges $75.00 a signature. In California, notary service is apparently big business.

14. Holy Sh*t! I used to be a notary in Pa. I charged $2.00 a sig.
but most of the time, it was people I knew so there was either no charge at all, or $200 total, no matter how many sigs.

I KNOW it's nowhere near that here in Ga! If it was, I'd sure go back to being a notary!!!!!

18. You were kind not to charge friends.
When I asked the notary I know (the mother of my daughter's best friend) what she'd charge me, she didn't hesitate to tell me $75.00 per signature. I was hoping she'd give me a small break considering that I frequently take her daughter for weekends at a time while she's out of town, but no such luck.

Anyhow, while California makes it relatively easy for a person to collect their own money that's been turned over to the state, collecting a deceased next of kin's money requires jumping through a lot of hoops.

15. Geez,
my bank does it for free, even if you only have $5 in your account. Your bank is ripping you off. Must be an FOB bank (friends of Bush).

19. No, actually they are San Francisco-based and
have a reputation for being quite progressive. In California unreasonably high balances for "free" services are, unfortunately, more the rule than the exception.

20. No, it's standard practice in California.
I've had the same experience, even had a bank where I had an account refused to notarize the documents at all because they weren't related to bank business. There are notaries at the copy centers and mailbox outlets and it's $20 and up per signature.

13. Actually, I just checked recently :)
I have a $350 check (not much, but it's nice to know it's there) that should be coming in the next few weeks. It was from an insurance claim check I never cashed back in 1993 or so :)

I sent the forms in a little over a month ago.

Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 11:41 AM by FlaGranny
what or how much? I found my name, but had to send in a request and will have to wait to find out I guess. This was in NJ. There was no indication of what it was at all. I haven't lived at that address for 28 years! I hope it includes interest. :-)

Edit: I checked a couple of years ago and found nothing, so it's a surprise something is now showing up.

24. I think it depends on how your state set up thier site.
Some tell you the value, some don't and some (SC) you have to send an email or call them to find out even if your name is there.
