First, Biden starts yet another Dem group effort -& his "I'm a moderate" campaign

Just what we need. Someone breaking off yet another piece of the Dems into a separate group. Feels like a slap back at Progressive Dems of America Group, donit? Pardon my pessimism folks but I fear the Dems are going to lose it all by themselves this next time.

Here's the Mission Statement

Unite Our States is born out of Senator Joe Biden's conviction that to make the 21st century an American century we must overcome the politics of division that have burdened our country in recent years.

Unite Our States helps elect candidates committed to addressing the real challenges facing our country at home and abroad by beginning to unite "red" and "blue" states, big cities and small towns, churchgoer and non-churchgoer, and Americans of all walks of life.

(snip)
With your support, Unite Our States works to diminish the partisan and divisive dialogue dominating American politics. Senator Biden and the candidates he supports are committed to building on the sense of unity and national purpose which all Americans demonstrated in the weeks and months following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Then there's Carper...
Sen. Carper to be named vice chairman of DLC

By JENNIFER BROOKS / News Journal Washington Bureau
07/15/2005

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Tom Carper has been tapped for a top post in the centrist Democratic Leadership Council.

He will be named vice chairman at the DLC's annual conference in Columbus, Ohio, later this month. The post could boost the national profile of Delaware's junior senator and give him a seat at the table as Democratic leaders work to draft a national strategy and message for the 2006 and 2008 elections.

"Democrats need to define ourselves by what we're for, not what we're against," Carper said Thursday. "We need to focus on what works to make us more secure as a nation, what works for job creation, what works to preserve and protect our environment."

Carper will introduce a few of his own ideas for the party when he addresses the DLC National Conversation on July 25.

1. #1: Every state has only 2 Senators.
#2: I don't know much about Carper, but Biden is Republican Lite.

16. Biden is not a member of PNAC
this particular bit of misinformation is being spread by some of the more far left leaning members of this board. It is a lie.

13. Biden is Republican lite (kinda)
Which is a shame. He talks a good game. I was very impressed with him the first time I heard him. However, if you look at his voting record it's not wonderful as I'd like it to be nor as progressive.

2. banana split
In the UK - the opposition labour party had a huge split. They were frustrated by the right wing press successfully portraying labour as "extreme" and "left wing".

A number of high profile MP's felt the part did not have enough middle ground appeal - and formed the Liberal Democrat Party. Quite a few joined - and the press speculated about the death of the Labour Party.

The new party tanked. One good showing at local level - then nada. Out in the cold.

Anywhere else on the planet - the Democratic Party in the USA would be classed as "Moderate Right". The "left wing" is not represented at all in mainstream politics (pretty much the same in the UK).

For anybody to be forming a breakaway "middle ground" group in response to the current situation - is either plain daft, or really working for the dark side. IMHOP

4. Probably
I think that the only people who think the mainstream democrats are very left wing are people who claim it in the media and it spreads around. There aren't that many VERY left leaning people around in the party now days.

7. I think there are two kinds of Democrats ...
Real Democrats and Republicans Who Call Themselves Democrats Because They Have Infiltrated the Party to Render It Spineless.

It is in times such as these that we can determine just who is who.

Howard Dean is a Real Democrat -- those Dems that attack him are "guess what".

8. Hmmm,...let's treat them like they're humans caught in a game that,...
,...that played upon their greatest weaknesses. They are finding their center,...bit by bit,...

Biden kicked ASS on Thursday, and carried the rest of the committee, including fellow concerned Republicans, with hin.

WE HAVE A COMMON ENEMY WHO DESTROYS PEOPLE AND PARTIES.

This shit is not partisan. All those who perpetuate the partisah GOP bullship are forever tainted as enemies against our people. Stupid, self-serving fucks are gonna know a short political career.

12. Biden voted for the bankruptcy bill.
And since Delaware is home to many major credit card companies, what does that tell you?

18. it tells me
that since the bankruptcy bill was going to pass anyway, there was no political advantage in opposing it. And a lot of political disadvantage in going against an industry that is one of the largest employers in your state.

that's politics...

11. I think that Tom Carper may be the least well known Senator
I find it interesting that he's taking a DLC leadership job. Whenever somebody posts a vote here on DU, I never really see his name on the list of those who voted with the GOP. Hence I say that he's the least well known Senator. He hasn't done anything noteworthy and he doesn't seem to break ranks, so nobody complains about him. This is the first time I've even seen an article about him.

I hope he doesn't have any illusions that he's running for President in 2008, because I don't think that it's going to happen.

15. Well... it is a Delaware Newspaper article and
we're well aware that he co-sponsored the bankruptcy bill and voted for it along with Biden (because MBNA - now bought by Bank of America) pretty much owns this state because it's the biggerst employer.

If I were cynical about politics - which goes without saying - I'd say it was suggested and done on purpose because of Biden's choice to make a run for the President.

19. How can you promote bipartisanship and unity when you're in the minority??
It's just ridiculous. We have no way to promote this. It is up to the dominant party to offer bipartisanship. We have no choice. If they want to beat us up, we can fight back or just take it. The other alternative is to plead for our lives, which is what this is. Claiming bipartisanship from a position of minority status is identical to surrender.
