WASHINGTON After mentioning a CIA operative to a reporter, Bush confidant Karl Rove alerted the president's No. 2 security adviser about the interview and said he tried to steer the journalist away from allegations the operative's husband was making about faulty Iraq intelligence.

The July 11, 2003, e-mail between Rove and then-Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley is the first showing an intelligence official knew Rove had talked to Matthew Cooper just days before the Time magazine reporter wrote an article identifying Valerie Plame as a CIA officer.

"I didn't take the bait," Rove wrote in an e-mail obtained by The Associated Press, recounting how Cooper tried to question him about whether President Bush had been hurt by the new allegations.

The White House turned the e-mail over to prosecutors, and Rove testified to a grand jury about it last year.

If this was serious they would've released this in the beginning of this revelation of everything. Not now. They wouldn't have let this go on long.

7. I just read more of this article

I can just imagine how Rove masterminded all this and then went on vacation.

He deals with Cooper, then sends the email to Hadley to cover his own butt, knows that Novak is publishing his article and Tenet is going to report flaws in Wilson's Niger findings. All tied up with a ribbon and Rove goes on his vacation with the Wilson business taken care of. Taken care of in his usual style of revenge. Don't just get even - ruin people's reputations, careers and lives. At least that's what popped into mind.

Consensus seems to be this is negative to Rove...shows he was trying to manipulate the media. Plmae is never mentioned ...he seems to be trying to steer Cooper away from investigating the Wilson story...maybe even a velvet glove threat ..."Time should not get too far out in front on this"...

Instead about the real issue of the investigation, the outing of a CIA agent and national security, make it about the front runner Wilson. Anything to make him look like a liar.
