Would the Chief Justice of SCOTUS have
access to the Grand Jury testimony? Just wondering if the decision of an 80 year old man in ill health to stay on in his job may be related to the direction this case may be going in. It's speculation I know, and it may have already been brought up in here before, but if it were me, and I saw something coming down that might just shake the foundation of the republic...I might not want to just walk away.

1. Fitzgerald's investigation?
No. They only have access to cases that appear before their court or those that are part of the public record.

Would the SP call a trusted mentor and ask a hypothetical question of him? Would the trusted mentor have the mental agility to do the math. At this point absolutely anything is possible I suppose. All I know, is I'm glad to hear he's sticking around for now.

BTW... did you know that if there is an impeachment, the SPJ would be the person to preside over the proceedings?

5. That would never happen.
Lawyers and judges are hyper-aware of and extremely respectful of the many rules that would prohibit any such communications. trust me on this one.

6. My take is that
Bush asked the Chief Justice not to retire now, because he fears that if the Rove hits the fan, so to speak, he will take such a hit politically that he wouldn't have the muscle to strong arm Specter and other moderate republicans into accepting the kind of total wingnut nominee that he wants to take Scalia's seat (after nominating Scalia for Rehnquist's seat)
