United Way withholds 1/4 of Boy Scout funds (Atlanta)
snips

"The United Way will withhold a portion of nearly $1 million in funding to local Boy Scouts because of its concerns about membership inflation involving the youth organization's program targeting inner-city black boys."

"The initiative was launched in 1991 to help promote and finance Scouting participation by disadvantaged and rural boys."

"An audit earlier this year, however, found that local Scouting officials inflated the membership of minorities, and critics say the practice was designed to increase funding from groups like the United Way."

"Before the audit, conducted by a law firm, Scout officials had put minority membership in Operation First Class at between 15,000 to 23,000. The audit, however, revealed the membership should be around 5,300, although critics say that number is still 10 times higher than it should be."

1. I stopped giving money to Boy Scouts
when I learned of their anti-gay policies.

I stopped giving to United Way long before that.

2. I stopped giving anything to the United Way...
because they support the boy scouts.

3. I give directly to the charities of my choice.
Sorry United Way, don't need to support your middleman costs.

AFAS the Boy Scouts, well, I won't dis the individual troops ...but the National Organization is a little out there IMHO.

BTW, I quit the scouts in the early 70's ... my troop made it mandatory to wear our uniforms to school on meeting days to support the VietNam war...I didn't take to well to that...

7. Yep, scouting around 1968.
Loads of fun. Absolutely ruined the concept of camping for me. A scoutmaster I remember with hate to this day. If we said we didn't want to wear the uniform to school, he'd ask us if we were ashamed of it. His idea of motivation was to call us names. And this guy was big cheese in the district council.

:Yikes:

No loss for me...I learned more about outdoor life, loyalty, duty and honor among my friends than I ever did among the scouts...I was lucky.

4. As a former scout,
I know BSOA is an excellent organization. Of course, I'm not black.

5. I was never a Boy Scout.
But I never would have thought they were so screwed up. First the gay thing. Then wasn't there some Christian conflict? And now this.

I was a YMCA Indian Guide. I thought that was pretty cool. My name was Little Bear.

6. Hey, I was too.
My name was Hawkeye. Our tribe was the Sac. The fathers would always laugh at that, and I never knew why.
