3. My idea of proper punishment
would make Gitmo look like a Sunday picnic. And best of all, it would be shown on TV as a Survivor-type show where the last one breathing thinks they win their freedom, but then they learn that theirs is the most horrendous end of all.

5. Apparently on the big island of hawaii...
there is a sacred ground. When someone was convicted of a capital
offense, they were released and hunted across the entire island with a
death sentence. If they reached the sacred ground, then they were
free.

Methinks that american justice has lost the principal of sacred ground
in its search for uniformity. Courts are hamstrung by minimum sentence
laws, and no justice can be applied by those most aware to apply it.

Sadly.

7. Well, back in Old Europe in the Good Ol' Days...
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 07:41 PM by baby_mouse
... those good ol' days that one of those silly Republicans wants us all to return to (I forget which one, he clearly doesn't know very much about them), they used to tie people's hands behind their backs, cut a hole in their gut and pull out and sever one end of the small intestine. Then they would nail that end to a tree and flog the prisoner so that he ran around the tree and ended up wrapping his own intestines around it as they were pulled out of him.

:-)

Europe. Lovely old place.

There are others. I could go on...

9. I have a kind of a gruesome idea
it's kinda like drawing and quartering but a bit different.
You take the criminal to a forest where there is an abundance of evergreen trees.

You put ropes on two trees and flex them down toward each other (note: the trees have to be flexible) and tie the ropes into stakes in the ground.

You attach two more ropes on each tree and tie them nice and tight, near the top preferably. You then take the criminal and stand him/her between the bended trees and tie the other ends of the ropes on the criminals hands and feet. You then have two cutters at each tree anchor and have them cut the anchor rope at the same time. The result should be that the trees fling back to their original positions thus taking the criminal with them. The arms and legs are ripped off of him/her and the head and torso continues to sail into the sky until gravity reclaims it.

Which involves slow strangulation, castration, and disembowelling...the "quartering" isn't done till AFTER the execution.

11. Beheading or the firing squad. I prefer flogging around the fleet.
Keelhauling could be survived.

Flogging around the fleet was where the miscreant was given a set number of lashes from the cat on every ship of the fleet in port. So, if the punishment was a dozen lashes per ship, the prisoner would be rowed from ship to ship, taking the punishment from every ship of the fleet in port. In some cases, the man was hauled up and lashed to the grating well past being dead for the punishment to be meted out; it was as an object lesson to all crewmembers who were piped up and assembled to witness the spectacle.

We're never so creative as we are when trying to hurt others.

This is no deterrent. Humane execution methods are better because then we don't become savages ourselves. In fact, the only reason to execute a traitor is to end claims to succession.

39. Keelhauling was a punishment for sailors "back in the day"
It consisted of the offender being lowered from the prow of the ship, then dragged along the keel. If he survived (not usually) he was then plucked from the waters astern.

56. A Dutch invention of corporal punishment 'at sea'
very very old school.

The idea is you tie the guilty with a rope that goes under the shipand up the other side(this can be done either bow to stern, or perpendicular to the ship). The man(men) in charge pull the rope, thus pulling the condemned underwater and against the hull of the ship, all the way until he emerges from the other side...

Now, this is particlarly painful because of splinters and barnicles on the hull, if the keelhauling is done right, the condemned will drag slowly but forcefully against the hull and not emerge until just within inches of drowning and bleeding to death.

37. I like the marooning idea!!!! Here's why
It's actually very poetic justice.

Strand them on an island that has fresh water and food supplies, and then "let them pull themselves up by their own bootstaps."

No government welfare, no interference in the free market, just free enterprise!!!

They should consider it paradise!

38. I believe the ultimate was a combination
They'd hang you and drop you down just as losing consciousness. Then you were disemboweled and then you were drawn and quartered. Of course this doesn't include any preliminary torture prior to your exectution.

God, King and Law, baby! http://bushflash.com/brits.html

40. As I Recall...
The correct punishment is to be drawn, disemboweled, quartered and beheaded AFTER being formally condemned by the Presiding Officer of the Tribunal, and remanded to the custody of the Senior Officer of the Watch On Deck, to be hung by the neck, by raising, from the forward yardarm of the USS Constitution.

I understand that the ship, now known as "Old Ironsides" is still available through the auspices of the Commander of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

It will require a phone call to his office by the Secretary of the Navy to arrange for the correct disposition to be made.

A suggestion: I think the Old Washington Navy Yard in DC would provide a lovely, and exceptionally appropriate location.
