Judge: Saddam trial could begin next month

Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein could go on trial as early as next month for his alleged role in a massacre 23 years ago, a top judge said Wednesday. He said the ousted dictator could face the death penalty.

Raid Juhi, chief judge of the Iraq Special Tribunal, said the investigation into the July 8, 1982 massacre in Dujail, a predominantly Shiite village 50 miles north of Baghdad, is complete.

Juhi said four other former senior officials would stand trial in the Dujail massacre, in which Saddam's security agents allegedly shot dead at least 50 people after a plot to assassinate him was uncovered.

Juhi said the trial would begin "in August or September, but we would like it to begin before that." Saddam and the others could be sentenced to death if convicted, Juhi said.

1. depends if Rreagan and Bush 1 go on trial with him. Since they were
behind Sadam 100% of the time and Sadam couldn't do anything without their help, I would think their guilt would be just as bad. That would be a nice hanging - Bush 1 & 2 and Sadam.

2. Saddam trial could be disasterous for *
The American public must NEVER know the true relationship between SH and the US.

Bet we won't even hear SH testify, if he does, it's all over.

3. We won't know until it gets underway. A lot depends on what info
comes out at trial. I know it's unlikely that most Americans will believe Saddam, but we don't know who all is going to testify and what they might say!

I dont think very many people will care and the TV networks will get tired of showing translated clips.

Edit: And the time difference will make live coverage impossible.

11. I'm not sure what effect it will have on Chimp.
I'll still be shocked if Saddam makes it to trial at all.
