Called AAR to talk about this but they ran out of time
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 09:36 PM by jsamuel
I am not talking about the 1st amendment, that issue is very complex and has nothing to do with what I am talking about here.

The media has been overlooking the statement made by Ms. Miller when she was just about to be sent to jail.

"I won't testify. The risks are too great. The government is too powerful."

She is not talking about any media matters here. She is saying that the "risk" she takes by testifiying is that "this" government would have the power to do something to harm her, her family, or her friends.

This is a very important point. She is in a way telling us that she is scared that the government (the Bush Administration) will bring harm to those around her or herself in order to pay her back for testifying against them. We already know they are capable of doing this because of what they did to Valerie Plame. That was payback too.

1. Martyrdom is what she's playing
She thinks she's doing a good job of it, too :eyes:

Real scared lady considering all the smiles, waves and whatnot in front of the cameras.

Sorry, don't buy it.

2. I do wonder why she is all smiles about this.
However all the media will talk about is how she is a martyr for the 1st amendment, and her own statement contridicts that.

3. I heard that news clip also, but I don't recall her saying she couldn't
...take the risk. It seemed like her statement was something along the line of not being at risk for withholding the name of the leaker. In other-words, how I heard her was in a tone of defiance against her accusers, not fear for herself or those close to her.

I've only heard that exchange from Miller that once when she was arrested, but that is how it sounded to me. To paraphrase Miller then as I heard her, "...the government is too powerful for any of you to hurt me!"

4. I updated the EXACT quote
the quote is almost exactly what i had before, but i got it directly from cbs news this time instead of a post here.

"I won't testify. The risks are too great. The government is too powerful."

6. It was not on CBS that I heard Miller.....
...anyway, the CBS reporter was saying what he heard Miller say: (CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart reports Miller said: "I won't testify. The risks are too great. The government is too powerful.") Want I recall was a direct quote from Miller using her own words and tone, as she was being hustled along by her attorney and/or police with microphones being shoved into her path and reporters firing questions from the side. I wish I could remember exactly which channel that was on and also the time and day, but sorry I can't. Dose anyone else recall seeing or hearing that?

8. What I quoted was what she said in court, not what she said to the press
while she was leaving it. I would trust what she said under oath rather than what she told the reporters outside, however it would be important to look at that as well.

9. Aha, so you did....the CBS report was about Miller's testmony....

...before U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan. Sorry, I saw the photo and the quote by the CBS reporter next to it and erroneously connected that back to earlier broadcast news reports before her arraignment. My mistake.

In your beginning post, you typed:

"The media has been overlooking the statement made by Ms. Miller when she was just about to be sent to jail."

That was where my mind still seemed to be. Taken into custody by police does not automatically imply going to jail. I keep forgetting that this is the United States of America where due process still applies.

Now Judith Miller is in jail for defiance of a court order to reveal her confidential sources which lead to a criminal act, the public outing of a CIA operative, Valerie Plame, by the government in retaliation against a State Department official, Plames husband Joseph Wilson, for not going along with false statements by the administration which caused this nation to go along with giving authority to its commander in chief to invade another country on false premises.

5. We HAVE to push this
Make the media start asking uncomfortable questions about WHY she seems to be afraid. We made them pay attention to DSM, we can do that here.
