Did I hear Randi right? Is the military recruiting by advertising for jobs
that seem to have no military connection, like truck drivers?

1. Yep
There was an ad posted here a while back for "postal workers." You can see a scan of it here:

2. Yep -- it's only after you express interest or apply that they come clean
Oh, BTW, it's a Navy job, not in the private sector ... These people have absolutely no scruples whatsoever. Honesty is for suckers.

6. Except the Navy
has met their recruiting requirements and are turning people away.

My Hubby is Active Navy.. the PR for the recruiting team in Pittsburgh (duck). Hey I wanted something state side and it was the only way for me to save him from going to Iraq. He was doing combat as a job before I begged him to take a desk job.

11. I thought the caller specifically mentioned the Navy
but I may be wrong. You're also right about their recruiting levels being met (Air Force too), so it makes sense they may not be using these tactics.

14. No No I agree
They very well could be using these tactics, but I also know in the PA area they are turning away people. Women, mainly since deploying them hinges on how many beds a ship has (female quarters).

It's possible they are indeed using ads in other areas were recruitment is not so great. But the Navy in their districts tend to pad the numbers. That is if Buffalo gets more Recruits then Pitt, and Pitt comes up short, they borrow from the excess of Buffalo.

Both the Navy and the Air Force have had their recruitment levels slashed to lower head counts. They are downsizing the Navy and Air Force.

Marines and Army, my husband and I have this convo all of the time, have severely lowered their standards, going for the low lying fruit(as Maher stated). Their tactics have gotten worse and dirtier.

20. I wonder if they are bringing them in for the Navy
and after they get them hot on the military they get them signing up for the Army or Marines, the old bait and switch.

I have a student that was supposedly with a Navy recruiter, two weeks later he tells me he is going in the Army :wtf: I talked him out of that idea "but my recruiter promised me No Iraq!"

22. Could it be
the Navy rejected them and they went for the Army themselves?

Unless the Navy had met their goal, and everyone in that office had, they wouldn't pass over on a recruit. In some small areas all of the recruiting offices happen to be in the same small place. So often you see Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines all jammed into the same space.

The promise of No Iraq .. is Bs. If it's not in writing ... it's not legit.

My Husband and I had an interesting conversation tonight about this topic. He constantly has to contend with POG, It's hard for me because I'm very against this war. I'm against the NCLB act, I'm a staunch liberal.

The best line of defense against recruiting is you, (teachers) and parents. But don't forget also, where the anger should be placed. At the top.
He and I discussed the misplaced anger, "People often forget, we are a tool of an Administration. We wouldn't be in Iraq at all if it weren't for Bush. But people are so pissed off at him, shit floats down hill."

3. That's nothing new.
They've been doing that since before I signed up back in 1998. Just crack open the Classifieds in any big city newspaper... The ads always read the same, don't tell that the person you're calling is a recruiter, mention paid training, 30 days a year vacation, and money for college... It's nothing new, but it is a shame.

15. You're right - I learned to decode those ads
while scouring the help wanted section over the last 25 years.
They would often advertise for "Musician". The tip-off was "ages 17-34"

5. How long before the Pentagon OK's "Shanghaing" 18 year olds?
Like ship captains use to Shanghai or kidnap sailors to man their ships, I wonder when the unofficial draft begins on civilians.

10. Yeah they did it here too
Back in the eighties, there wasn't any work here, the military had more want ads than anyone else, after a while I didn't pay attention to them.

12. Seen them myself
While driving with my beloved, I spy a HUGE banner on the hi-way side of non descript single story warehouse-like building. It advertises:
HIRING NOW! HIRING BONUSES!!
I say hmmm, as I am looking for a higher paying job right now.
I say hmmm till we pass by the building and see the other building face, "Missouri National Guard".

I chuckle uncomfortably. My Beloved says, having not seen this, say "what going on". I point it out to her. our car fills with discomfort.

Also, while shopping at Sam's about two weeks ago I couldn't help but notice an M1A1 Abrams, a 'Climbing Wall', and a small trailer containing Audio visual displays, etc. Milling about were an assundry assortment of Recruiters, KS Natl Guard, KS Air Guard, Regl. Army, etc. On the side of the trailer was another banner!

HIRING NOW! HIRING BONUSES!!

Is it coming to this?

Chris

18. Double checked
30 percent of all recruitments come from Ads. Far as I know only the Navy and Air Force use them.

The two branches of the service that are turning people away.

Far as I know the Army and Marines haven't gone that route. Instead they are taking they target marketing route.

Has the military been privatized and we weren't told or is the military practicing sleazy recruiting tactics, yet again?
