They are investigating the investigation of the 3 dead boys
They have footage of an officer going up to the car looking under the car and she never checks the trunk. Why did the dogs not smell them? Why did not cadaver dogs not smell them?

2. She probably didn't have the legal authority to check the trunk
at that point. She didn't know who the owner was, and maybe the car was locked.

But she should've followed up and tried to seek legal permission to check the trunk, definitely.

3. I don't understand why they didn't look in the trunk.
I thought that was SOP in cases like this.

4. You would think that the trunk would be the first place to look
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 12:14 PM by notadmblnd
and yet when my son went missing at 9 yrs old, it never occured to us to look in the trunk of the cars. We looked all over the house and neighborhood and finally called the police. When they arrived, it did not occur to them to look in the trunk either, they were speaking to us and asking where we thought he would go as a 9yr old. We were incredably lucky that day, he was found behind the pillows on the couch taking a nap.

I'm not justifying the cops behavior, whether they did right or wrong... I know it just never occured to us as parents to look in the trunk

5. Police are Professionals, they are trained to
look in any old cars including trunks, old appliances, freezers, etc... Parents are too stressed to think clearly but the Police are supposed to be professionals and have a set plan for looking for kids...

6. Plus, this was a car that apparently the legal owners weren't around
so the cops didn't have easy access to getting legal permission to look in the trunk unless they got the proper paperwork in order to jimmy it open.

It would've been different if the kids had been in there yelling, or if the dogs had cued on it. They could've pried it open without permission then.

8. Same here
A couple of years ago a neighbor's 6 year old son was lost (he was found safe and sound). Everyone, including the police, was looking for him but nobody opened car trunks. Cars trunks are always locked, so how did these three boys get in? Was the lock broken? If it was, then why weren't they able to get out?

9. How did that Dad get the trunk open?
I do not want to imply anything about those parents at a time like this, but how did that dad get that trunk open if it was locked?

Seems to me that if the dad could do it the police almost certainly could if they'd wanted to...

Was this case of them not looking all that hard for those poor little missing kids?

10. According to this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer,
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 02:13 PM by enough
the dad opened the driver side front door of the car and "popped the trunk." This car was sitting in the yard where the three boys were last seen (the yard of one of their homes). It just seems inconceivable that somebody didn't look in the trunk.

To my mind, this means that they had died in the trunk before anyone realized that they were seriously missing. So there was no sound to alert people. By the time they were known to be missing, everybody was thinking they had to be somewhere else. Still it seems incredible.

12. and I bet that's the same way the kids got in the truck.
Either pop the truck or move away the barrier between the passenger compartment and the trunk.

11. Maybe they were still alive when the dogs sniffed the car
and the dogs only smell cadavers?

It does sound like someone screwed up. How long do you figure those kids lived while in the trunk?
