Message for National Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

During the month of June, the U.S. Department of Transportation will observe National Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.

The Department's workforce is becoming more and more diverse, and at DOT we value the efforts of all employees who contribute to the success of our mission. All employees are entitled to an environment where each individual is given the opportunity to perform and fully contribute. I have spent my career in public life dedicated to the principle that no one should be treated differently simply because of the population group to which they belong. This principle is central to the sincere respect that I believe all of us, as Americans, owe to each other.

A few months ago, I reissued the Departmental Equal Employment Opportunity Policy Statement. As stewards of our Nation's transportation system, and as leaders in our professions and communities, we must work to build an environment that ensures every employee is treated with dignity and respect. My commitment to this end remains steadfast

It is my goal to make the Department the employer of choice for all Americans. I ask for your support and assistance to accomplish this goal. As we observe National Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, I encourage each of you to participate in our planned activities, celebrating the pursuit of equal rights for all.
