Frontline- Contractors in Iraq
The private side of war....
Private Warriors
Martin Smith

- Tens of thousands of contractors living /working in Iraq
- Many headquartered in the Green Zone
- Soldier calls it The International Zone
- The Army Core of Engineers does not rely on soldiers for security
they have outsourced to non American security/most 30's, 40's
- Greatest danger in Western Iraq - travel
- Risk threat is high
- More than 150 mill. for non military security / Aeris Co.
- Attacked once or twice a week- 15 or so security teams around the country / Aeris Co.
- Situation on the roads is chaotic, laws are just being written
- Private security workers can make up to $1000 a day
- Blackwater was the company responsible for the 4 private security
guards who were killed in Fallujia prior to the bombing of that
city
- These 4 were sent into the area of Fallujia w/o a map, rear
firepower, or armored vehicles
- Subsequent, the US military entered city to find the killers
- Incident created animosity among military
- Military putting together new doctrine re: contractors
(two years later people)
- Military does not communicate information to private security
- Coalitional authority has tried to improve communication and turn
to---another outsourced security team!!!!

Unbelievable report

9. FRONTLINE 9:00 PM AND 2:00 AM PACIFIC TIME!
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 11:01 PM by Zinfandel
FRONTLINE returns to Iraq, this time to embed with Halliburton/KBR, and to take a hard look at private contractors, including Blackwater, Aegis, Erinys and Custer Battles, who play an increasingly critical role in running U.S. military supply lines, providing armed protection and operating U.S. military bases.

These private warriors are targeted by insurgents and in turn have been criticized for their rough treatment of Iraqi civilians. Their dramatic story illuminates the Pentagon's new reliance on corporate outsourcing and raises tough questions about where they fit in the chain of command and the price we are paying for their role in the war.

8. This website Operation Truth
has stories from the soldiers; most of them do not sound too happy. Here is a soldier, Bobby Yen, talking about the mercenary sitch. I took the last part out, You can read the whole thing and the stories of others at:

Disorganized and Unprepared (Bobby Yen)

snip

""Finally, the saddest thing was the PSD, or Private Security Details. Mercenaries, or civilians paid to bear arms and armor. Doing the exact job of the military, but once again being paid many times what the military was paid. Although many of these civilians were highly trained or specialized, there was enough talk among soldiers who wanted to do their time, get out, and then join these civilian security companies, because they were such a better deal. Not only does this prove how poorly treated our own troops are, but hiring these people actively increases our own recruiting problems.

All three of these issues just point to one underlying, glaring point: we were not ready. We were not ready for this war, and we're willing to pay huge amounts of top dollar and increase our national deficit to shore up our mistakes. Not only that, but we're willing to abuse our current military, because the repercussions will probably start in a few years, which won't reflect heavily on the current government.

I remember the skepticism and flat out anger I felt when watching our President and his comments to the American people. When he said that our troops might come home after the election, if the Iraqi troops were ready to take control."
