Book Recommendation: Fiction

I recently read John Steinbecks "the Moon is Down" I probably should have read it before (it was written in 1942). It is a novella (a mere 182 pages) about the Nazi occupation of Norway - and how the psychology (on both sides) shifts from the day of the Germans arrival until all out insurrection erupts. I'm not comparing anyone to the Nazi's here - it is a book about occupation, not about politics. But, had more people read this book before the war, I think the debate would have gone very differently. The parallels are striking.

1. You might also like Grahm Greene's "The Quiet American"

Written in 1955 it pretty much exactly predicts the outcome of the American involvement in Viet Nam; the inevitable catastrophe that results from the hubris of occupation.

3. A very lame movie (by today's standards) was made from that

novel in the mid-forties. It was patriot time.
