LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) On Thursday (June 16), the House Appropriations Committee approved a hefty $142.5 billion spending bill covering health, education and labor programs. That bill also includes cutting funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by 25 percent, or $100 million.
According to media reports, the bill was drafted by Ohio Republican Rep. Ralph Regula and its impact will be felt from K Street to Sesame Street. Initially, Regula attempted to eliminate all funding for PBS in 2008, but Democrats on the Committee added an amendment to set aside $400 million to safeguard the future of public television.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting funnels the federal funds into the Public Broadcasting System, which operates 348 public television stations in the United States. A PBS spokesperson tells Reuters that the cuts are likely to hurt smaller stations, but also notes that past attempts to cut funds haven't been able to pass.
