A group of international authors who have written about major catastrophes (the meltdown at Chernobyl, the 1985 Mexico earthquake, the genocide in Rwanda, and others) discuss their work and explain why they do it. From the Freedom Fest convention in Las Vegas, author Thomas DiLorenzo talks about his new book, "How Capitalism Saved America: The Untold History of Our Country, From the Pilgrims to the Present." In it, the author chronicles how he believes capitalism has affected the formation of our country over the past four hundred years. He also writes that historians are often quick to blame capitalists for many of the economic setbacks faced by the United States (Great Depression, energy deregulation, etc..), but he believes there are other causes for the problems.

Author Bio: Thomas DiLorenzo has authored or co-authored twelve books, including "The Real Lincoln." He regularly contributes articles to USA Today, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal among others. He is currently a professor of economics at Loyola College in Maryland.

On June 15th, Representative Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced legislation to amend section 215 of the Patriot Act, which deals with the federal government's ability to obtain sales and lending records from bookstores and libraries. Following Rep. Sanders' remarks, the amendment was debated on the floor by members of the House of Representatives. The amendment eventually passed with the support of 199 Democrats and 38 Republicans.

University of Texas history professor Paul Woodruff spoke to an audience at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Austin, Texas about his new book, "First Democracy: The Challenge of an Ancient Idea." In it, Mr. Woodruff writes about the concept of the ancient Athenian democracy and the ideals around which it based. These include freedom from tyranny, the rule of law, the wisdom of citizens, reason without knowledge, and general education. The author also contends that the American system of democracy is not a strict adherence to the ideals of the Athenian democracy but is a successful representative democracy and a modern adaptation and interpretion of the ancient system.

Author Bio: In addition to "First Democracy," Paul Woodruff is the author of "Reverence: Renewing a Forgotten Virtue." He is currently a professor of ethics and American society in the philosophy department at the University of Texas at Austin.

Milbry Polk and Angela Schuster discuss the effects of the current war in Iraq on the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. The editors of "The Looting of the Iraq Museum," along with Donny George, the director of the museum, explain that more than 15,000 objects were stolen or destroyed and that a large amount of history has been lost. During the event Mr. George shows slides containing pictures of pieces that have been returned since the attack on the museum. This event was hosted by the National Arts Club in New York City.

Author Bio: Milbry Polk is a photojournalist and author of "A History of Arabian Transportion" and "Egyptian Mummies. She also co-authored "Women of Discovery" with Mary Tiegreen. Angela Schuster is the editor of the preservation magazine, ICON, a contributer to the New York Times, and a contributing editor at Archaeology magazine.

The Interrogators: Task Force 500 and America's Secret War Against Al Qaeda
Chris Mackey

Chris Mackey talks about his experiences serving as an interrogator for the U.S. Military in Afghanistan. In his book, "The Interrogator," the author recounts incidents that ocurred between soldiers and the Afghan prisoners of war held at Bagram Air Base. Mr. Mackey details these encounters and describes his role as a senior interrogator. The author answers questions from the audience following his discussion. This event was hosted by Robin's Bookstore in Philadelphia.

Author Bio: Chris Mackey began his career with the U.S. Army as an interrogator at the age of seventeen. After September 11, 2001 he was assigned to Task Force 500 and sent to Kandahar, Afghanistan as a senior interrogator.

This week on After Words Neil Baldwin former executive director of the National Book Foundation discusses his new book "The American Revelation: Ten Ideals That Shaped Our Country from the Puritans to the Cold War." Mr. Baldwin profiles men and women whose ideals have influenced morals and values in America. The book includes biographical sketches on colonial Massachusetts governor John Winthrop and his idea of a "city on a hill"; Thomas Paine, author of the pamphlet, "Common Sense"; and Secretary of Sate George C. Marshall who drafted the plan to rebuild Europe after World War II. He is interviewed by Joseph Bottum, editor of First Things magazine.

Author Bio: Neil Baldwin was the executive director of the National Book Foundation, sponsor of the National Book Awards for fifteen years. He is the author of ten previous books, including Henry Ford and the Jews: The Mass Production of Hate, Edison: Inventing the Century, and Man Ray: American Artist, as well as poetry, criticism, and history. Joseph Bottum is the editor of First Things magazine. His essays, reviews, and poetry have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Atlantic Monthly, Nineteenth-Century Literature, The Weekly Standard, Commentary, National Review, Philosophy & Literature, and elsewhere.

Baghdad Bulletin: Dispatches on the American Occupation
David Enders

David Enders is a 24 year-old independent journalist who moved to Baghdad during the war in Iraq to open the only English language newspaper written, printed, and distributed there during the war. He writes about his time spent working with the newspaper in "Baghdad Bulletin: Dispatches on the American Occupation." The book chronicles his experiences as a journalist with press credentials covering the war from outside the territory of the coalition-controlled Green Zone, and gives a first-hand account of life for Iraqi civilians during the war. Mr. Enders tells stories of hiring a local Iraqi to act as a house manager for his staff, having guns held to his head, and of daily civilian interaction with coalition forces.

Author Bio: David Enders was the editor of the Michigan Daily, the campus newspaper at the University of Michigan. He has reported for the BBC and his work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, and the Nation.

David McCullough chronicles the military side of the American Revolution in his new book, "1776." The author describes the role the weather played during the winter months, George Washington's uncertainty of American victory, and the morale of the troops on both sides of the war. This event took place at Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens in Virginia.

Author Bio: David McCullough is the author of "Truman," "John Adams," "Brave Companions," "Mornings on Horseback," "The Path Between the Seas," "The Great Bridge," and "The Johnstown Flood." Mr. McCullough received the Pulitzer Prize in 1993, for "Truman," the Francis Parkman Prize, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award, and is twice winner of the National Book Award, for history and for biography.
