Denver DSM rally - PHOTOS
I went to the rally in Denver. It was a pretty good turnout for something that was organized in less than 48 hours.
We gathered outside the Denver Post, on the southern end of the 16th Street Mall. The organizers had a letter to the
Post that we all signed and they delivered on the spot. (Scroll right to see a panoramic of the crowd.)

Many people walking by talked with us. I personally talked with three people, none of whom had heard anything about
the minutes.

We left the Post to deliver signed letters to other media outlets. Here we are marching past the capitol.

Channel 4 actually just showed us on the 10pm news as I post this! It was probably only 30 seconds
8 minutes into the broadcast, but was above the California earthquake coverage. It's a start, and you
could definitely read our signs.

After CBS4, we headed over to the ABC affiliate. Channel 7 refused to take our letter (have to deliver
it during normal business hours). We chanted "More news, less Jackson!" and waved Democracy Now!
signs as the traffic stopped at the lights on the corner.

Fox was right across the road, so we headed over there. Fox also refused to take our letter, and even called
a Denver cop to stand outside.
My favorite chant in front of Fox: "Not a Fox but a chicken!"

The coolest part was that the cop asked us what the memo was. Three of us (all older women, and two of
us ministers) talked with him for about 10 minutes. He was very interested, and even offered to get
us an escort if we were afraid of walking downtown by ourselves. (Just like a boy scout offering to
help an old lady across the street--such a nice young man!)

A small group went on to Channel 9, the NBC affiliate, but most of us had to leave. On the way back
to my car, though, I saw this car's bumper stickers. I loved them all so much, I took a picture of it.
I enlarged the one so that you could read it. As a minister, I really appreciated the sentiment.

9. NOMINATED!
Wow - - a rally in Denver, and organized in less than 48 hours. That's FABULOUS, simply fabulous. I had no idea it was going to happen. Were there any other cities involved? And protesting the MEDIA -- now who would've thought of such a thing?? :sarcasm:

Great pix. Hooray for Denverites!!

13. How can I find out about protests in Denver
If I had known when and where, I would have loved to be there. I'm no organizer but I can at least add one to the mass of protesters.

I'm glad you protested the Denver Post. When they put the page one headline up "Beer returns to CSU games" in the midst of all that's going on...especially the DSM...I lost *all* respect for them.

17. I heard about it here:
The Mercury Coalition for Honest Elections

As soon as I read the email I got from them, I came to post it on DU. Saw that Hapameli beat me to it. So I could have heard about it through DU.

You could also watch these calendars:

Colorado Communities for Justice and Peace
American Friends Service Committee

Welcome to DU, gtar100! :hi:

31. Front page coverage shortly lived.
Your link says they posted the story at 1:10 am Mountain Time, you linked to it about 6 hours later. Now, just 4 and a half hours after your post, it is gone from even the links from front page coverage. :(

Thank God they added that Jackson won't sleep with children anymore, that's important to know. :eyes:

Worse, it never made the front page in the printed edition. It was a small piece at the bottom of page 12A. :grr:

25. WONDERFUL!!!
Thanks for sharing the photos. For folks who can't march, go to www.justicefornone and print up some flyers to hand out at the malls. One thing I do that some may not want to spend their money to do is to purchase some "patriotic" paper from Staples (flags, military borders etc.) and print the handbill info on both sides. Nothing attracts Republicans like patriotic symbols. If you can't purchase the paper just print a yellow ribbon symbol on the corner of your page. This helps get the RW nuts to read the info.

I love the idea of using RW biases against them. Like the handbill equvilent of Aikido.

28. Denver Post Editorial on the DSM!
This morning's Post:

Another confidential British memo has surfaced to fan fresh criticism about the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war. This time, the issue is whether the Bush administration ignored warnings to plan for the war's complicated aftermath.

The document, like another British memo - the so-called Downing Street memo that was leaked last month - echoes reports from 2002 when experts predicted a quick U.S. military victory followed by a difficult period of stabilizing Iraq. Even then-U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell worried that the Defense Department wasn't doing enough post-war planning.

The force of the British memo comes from the clarity of its language. It was written July 21, 2002, and its warning - that "a postwar occupation of Iraq could lead to a protracted and costly nation-building exercise" - now looks prophetic. The memo said, "U.S. military plans are virtually silent on this point . . . Further work is required to define more precisely the means by which the desired end state is created, in particular what form of government might replace Saddam Hussein's regime and the time scale within which it would be possible to identify a successor."

35. Thank you for the good words - from an organizer
Hi everyone,

I had to wait for my address to "clear" with DU, so I'm afraid this isn't very timely!

I was one of the two Denver women who decided to organize this action at the last minute. We got a few other people on board quickly, and some much-needed publicity assistance from www.3novembermovement.org, the grassroots organization in Denver to which I belong (which came into being just after the last stolen election). 3November organized the "Counter-Coronation" on January 20 and the national peace action on March 19. For other actions in Denver please check our Web site! We try to network and coalition-build with other peace, social justice, and progressive groups, and to promote their events.

We were excited that we actually made the Channel 4 news and that the Post printed an AP article and an editorial. Evi, my partner in crime, passed out 150 informational flyers about the scandal to passerby, and I must say we attracted a fair amount of attention. Broadway, Lincoln, and Speer are three of the main "arteries" in Denver. There was a lot of honking as well as a few expletives.

Feel free to contact me with comments or questions!

Keep on,
Carolyn
