A Nanaimo judge has granted a lesbian couple's bid for B-C's first same-sex divorce.
In issuing the order, B-C Supreme Court Justice Laura Gerow struck down the old definition of a married couple under the Divorce Act as being unconstitutional.
The women -- identified only by their initials -- were married in Parksville in 2003.
Lawyer Elisabeth Strain, who represented one of the women, says it would be nonsensical and unfair to allow same-sex marriage but not divorce.
