Things The Democrats Could Do, If They Grew Spines
Was disgusted to read on the front page this morning that Conyers has to have the Downing Street Memos hearing at the DNC headquarters rather than in the Capitol because Sensenbrenner has told people not to let them use the meeting rooms. This is really just unbelievable. Because you're the minority party, you can't book a conference room in your own building? Next they move all the Democratic offices into the basement and put Reid's in the bathroom, right?

Well, OK, assholes, you want to play "let's use control over public spaces to symbolize our political ascendancy." Well, ya know, space is symbolic for everyone, chief.

If I were Conyers, I would call up whoever is in charge of booking the rooms, request one, and then, when I got denied, would announce that the meeting was going to be held there anyway. Then, when I showed up with my witnesses and media and whatnot, someone would have to be sent out there to tell us we couldn't use the room. At that point, I would express my disappointment that the Republicans were playing partisan politics with an issue of such great national and global import, especially to the families of our brave troops overseas who deserve to know why they were really sent there, and then march everyone out to the lawn and hold the hearing there.

But that's just me.

Ah well,

The Plaid Adder

1. Yep, or
have a good old fashioned sit in to reclaim a space Democrats have the right to use until they try to arrest members of Congress, which they won't do. But, for a sitting member of Congress, your suggestion is probably better.

4. more public outrage, like you described, is using the media.
and it's attacking the republicans on a turf they've laid claim to themselves.

DO IT!

6. they need someone, anyone to practice a little civil disobedience
Nothing else that they are doing seems to be worth the big bucks we gift them with.

7. Good idea.
But what has Conyers done to suggest that the reason he's not doing this is because he lacks a spine? Maybe it just didn't occur to him.

9. I didn't mean to impugn Conyers' spine at all.
God knows he's been carrying water for just about all the Congressional Democrats for years now. But to do something like this properly he'd have to have the support of the other Congressional Democrats, and you just know that most of them would think this was 'too confrontational' and not 'collegial,' like the Republicans are so moderate and collegial it would be a shame to be rude to them.

Sigh,

8. Yup, you're right
I'm not sure where I heard it, but a newspaper person says that the reason some stories are written up and some aren't is because of conflict. If a story has conflict, they are more likely to print it.
