Military draft back on US agenda
Military draft back on US agenda

By Maxim Kniazkov in Washington

June 13, 2005

THE United States would "have to face" a painful dilemma on restoring the military draft as rising casualties saw the number of volunteers dry up, a senator warned today.

Joseph Biden, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the prediction after new data released by the Pentagon showed the US Army failing to meet its recruitment targets for four straight months.

"We're going to have to face that question," he said on NBC's Meet the Press TV show when asked if it was realistic to expect restoration of the draft.

"The truth of the matter is, it is going to become a subject, if, in fact, there's a 40 per cent shortfall in recruitment. It's just a reality," he said.

The comment came after the Department of Defence announced the army had missed its recruiting goal for May by 1661 recruits, or 25 per cent. Similar losses have been reported by army officials every month since February.

2. The rich brats...
whose parents support this war will just get out of the draft anyway, which means there will just be more poor kids going off to fight their illegal wars!

6. To be honest , I just can't wait. When the draft comes back, then and
only then will the masses wake up.

Keep recruiting papers in your car for all the yellow ribbon, we support W, support our troops sticker, driving SUV, proud parents.

7. There will be no draft.
You will notice that Joe Biden is not a Republican. Democrats are the only ones talking about it, and the voters will remember, even if the draft never is restored. Which it won't be. The Republicans are way too smart to hand us this weapon. Why do we keep letting Karl Rove play us like suckers??

9. Dems are talking about it so that when it happens the repubs
won't be able to claim it came out of nowhere, as a reasonable reaction to the new 9/11.

They are planning it. It will happen. All they need is an excuse.

And, IMO, that is in the works, too.

11. There will be no draft.
But if there is a new 9/11, perhaps the American people will support it and we still will make no headway, electorally.

but there will be no draft.

13. When (not if) there is a new 9/11 we will have to respond.
With our military in the shape it's in now, we cannot respond. We can't even do what we're currently doing, much less add on another front to the war on terra.

A draft is inevitable, unless we kick these bastards out.

15. Yet most people here,
or at least so it seems to me, seem to think that unless there is a draft, we won't be able to kick th em out.

18. Indeed it is.
There won't be a draft, though. The Republicans are politically way samrter than we are, and will not be likely to hand this to us as an issue.

8. Why do these articles always quote Democrats
Democrats don't want a draft, they don't even want a war. Is Biden too stupid to realize this. His quote would be just fine if he connected it back to the poor foreing policy of the Bu$h administration, but he doesn't, so it sounds like the Democrats want a draft. Biden gave an honest answer, but at least connect the cause to the effect of the policy.

The Republican on MTP said that no way there would be a draft.

10. And bush said there were no plans to invade Iraq, too.
First rule of republican-speak.

EVERYTHING THEY SAY IS A LIE.

Once you've got that nailed down, you can start to understand what's going on with them.

14. wrong question: "do we need a draft?"
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 01:32 PM by welshTerrier2
right question: "WHY do some think we need a draft?"

wrong answer: "Because we are not meeting our recruiting goals."

right answer: "Because we have not learned to play nicely in the sandbox with the other children."

both Democrats and republicans have been beating the war drums in Iraq and have been talking about confrontation with Syria and Iran ... it they won't stop waging these elective wars, they must be removed from power ...

20. WAKE UP. A draft will NEVER happen
The fools in the House (which is where a draft is voted on) know they would face certain defeat in the next election. And remember, they happen every 2 years.

21. Letter to the Freepers.
I was going to post this on the Freep site but obviously you need a login. So I emailed the site administrator:

To: jimrob@psnw.com
Subject: I need assistance.

Actually, it's not me who needs assistance, but the U.S. Military.

As I know your website is very much pro-war and very gung-ho for illegitimate
mass murder, death, mayhem, and general war profiteering, I thought I might take
this moment to introduce you to a sincere opportunity opening up to you and your
fellow Freepers:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20...

It seems the Bush war machine needs people and badly, to the tune of 10,000 new soldiers
a month, give or take. That's a staggering sacrifice to be made on their behalf, but I know that
you have many many more members than that on your website. Therefore, it follows that
you're the best place to get fresh blood from (pardon the pun) to help keep the war machine
going. So, are you going to do it? Are you going to sign up yourself, or invite your members
to put their money where their mouths are? Think of it as a fundraising drive; after all, I'm sure
you collect money on George Bush's behalf (not that he needs it -- he's a rich millionaire with
lots of connections) Let's hope in the name of the sacrifice that is asked of people by Bush & Co.
that his most diehard supporters get involved in this exciting new opportunity!

Support The Troops? You betcha, Freepers!

Sincerely,
