A note from a mother of a fallen soldier about a DSM action
Dear Friends,

Please take time to contact the Representatives below to urge them to attend Rep. Conyers hearing this Thursday at two about the Downing Street Memo. It is so important that this becomes a non-partisan issue, because a president violating the Constitution is a non-partisan issue and the incident should be investigated.

Thank you so much. I know you will come through in memory of our loved ones who are dead for lies and for absolutely nothing and for our loved ones and innocent Iraqis still in harm's way.

Peace Soon,

Cindy

To: Rep. Walter Jones http://jones.house.gov/

CC: Rep. Howard Coble http://coble.house.gov/
Rep. John Duncan http://www.house.gov/duncan/
Rep. Jim Leach http://www.house.gov/leach/
Rep. Ron Paul http://www.house.gov/paul/

Dear Congressman Jones,

On behalf of my son, Spc. Casey Austin Sheehan, KIA, Sadr City, Baghdad 04/04/04; more than 1700 other brave Americans; and the millions of Americans and Iraqis still in harm's way in Iraq, I thank you and the other Republican Representatives who went against your party's line and voted for Lynn Woolsey's amendment to the defense funding bill. I know that it took a huge amount of courage and integrity to do so and it gives me hope that eventually this illegal occupation of Iraq will end and that innocent lives will be spared.

Congressman, my precious son is dead because of the lies, mistakes and miscalculations of this administration that led us to invade a country that was no threat to the USA. My precious boy was killed for no reason and it now appears that his death was premeditated and this fact is shown by the prefabricated intelligence that convinced Congress and the American public that our military should invade Iraq. Think of it, I will NEVER see my boy again, hear his voice, dance at his wedding, or hold my granchild. It is not fair and I believe someone should be held accountable.

If it were suspected that I, as an average citizen was responsible for even one death, that suspected crime would be investigated. The civil authorities would not care if I were a Democrat or a Republican, the crime would still be investigated. I believe that Casey and all the other Americans and all the countless, uncounted and unnamed Iraqis deserve the same consideration. All of the innocent dead deserve to have their murders investigated: whether the person responsible is a Democrat or a Republican.

As you have shown great strength of character in the past, I am asking you to do so now. Please attend Rep. John Conyers' hearing this Thursday, June 16th, about the so-called Downing Street Memo. It would show the American people that justice in our country is truly blind: blind to partisan politics and blind to class distinctions. Also, I will be testifying at the hearing and it would be an honor for me to have you come to lend me your moral support.

Again, thank you for the kind letter you sent me after Casey was killed. It meant so much to me that you took such obvious care to extend your condolences to me and my family.

In Peace,

Cindy Sheehan

3. She was on MSNBC last week
and one of the Pro-war mom's said she should be proud because her son died doing what he wanted (since he enlisted).
She promptly corrected her and said no he wasn't.
She said that when he enlisted, he scored high on the ASVAB and was told he could be a Chaplain's Assistant and that was his passion so he signed.
However, after he enlisted, they changed him to a Humvee mechanic since "that is where the need was".
So, this man who had aspirations of being a Chaplain in the Armed Forces, died as a Humvee mechanic.
I would hardly say he "died doing what he loved".
Kudos to Mrs. Sheehan for pointing that out.

Here is my standard letter to the Media:

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made. Now further documents have been released in the British media which cast even further doubts.

These documents and other documents suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy. Some of these documents make it clear that the administration had no credible plan for dealing with the post-war occupation.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Minutes” and other disturbing documents.

Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible in-depth follow-up discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of possible fixing of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.

Sincerely,

5. Cindy was at an anti-war "teach-in" in DC ...
which I caught the tail end of. It unfortunately coincided with the "Take Back America" conference and subsequent demonstration ... so I missed hearing her speak, but saw her and listened to part of the discussion. I give her a lot of credit - her story is heartbreaking.
