"I need you for the army of Christ."
Sign seen on US-64 west of Brevard, NC, today. WTF? There was some fine print that I could not read from the car at 55 mph. Maybe it was just a plug for a revival. Maybe not. :scared:

8. In the 60s a college friend and I "liberated" a big "Jesus Saves" sign.
It was about 6'x4' and was on a tree on a county road near Auburn, Alabama. We were in my atheist friend's '64 Austin-Healy 3000, riding the back roads and sipping iced tea (right!). We had the top down and actually held the sign above us (resting on the top of the front window and the chrome luggage rack). My friend put it up on his apartment wall. Great art, eh?

Jesus Saves AND GRETZKY SCORES ON THE REBOUND!

10. In the little figurine thing - whose side is Jesus on?
The kids are indistinguishable. Jesus seems to like them both. How does he choose the winner? Presumably they are both praying to Jesus to let them win the skirmish. Who Would Jesus Choose? Which little boy goes home crying today?

3. Interesting, clearly they are reading a different bible than I am
the Christ of my bible would not want an army.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5. And...
"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him (Peter), "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." Matthew 26:52

Doesn't sound like Jesus wants an army.

7. Christ's central message was
Peace, forgiveness and charity. Armies seldom fit any of those categories (occasionally members of military are charitable, but it's not really the mission of the military unless it's an means to an end).

11. Bingo! The "Christians" NEVER quote the Sermon on the Mount (Beatitudes)
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 10:25 PM by DemoTex
Never! Why do they hate Jesus? Why do they dredge up the retributive passages of the Old Testament? It is because they are not really Christians; they are religious zealots fitting scripture to their cause. Both Shakespeare and the Gospel Luke said, in effect, that the devil can cite scripture for his own purpose. Folks, we are looking the devil in the eye. The anti-Christ (666) isn't an individual, it is a movement. We are watching it, in the name of Jesus Christ, take over this country.

17. Mr Gaia's southern baptist grandmother looked me in the eye
and told me that bush and his cronies are the anti-christ. She said that we are all looking for someone who declaims christ but in reality the anti-christ will seemingly embrace christ and then pervert his message.

How she can stay Southern Baptist is beyond me. Especially in that small southeast OK town.

6. Hey, Mac, think about the current controversy at the AF Academy
and recall that a candidate for it has to have a recommend from a Congressman. Now, who are too many of those Congress Critters pandering to of late?

THERE'S something else to worry about while you ponder 'the army of Christ'.

9. Hi there, Mac! I haven't seen you around for a little while...
It's nice not to have to live in the Bible Belt. There are plenty of fundy wing-nuts here regardless. I have to say, I hate the fact that as a Christian, I have to view other at least nominal "Christians" as the enemy. They are doing terrible things to a faith I cherish.

Anyway, how are you? How's the blood pressure? Keep me up to date, buddy.

:hi: B-)

13. Hi Aristus!
I've been here all the while. I'm like a cockroach, here and un-effected by Toxic Tom Delay. I'm back to full-time (more-or-less) writing. I'm writing for a UK aviation magazine, a US aviation magazine, and doing editorial work for an international aviation safety and accident investigation consulting firm. But I still hit DU daily (at least!).
Mac

16. The military metaphor goes way back in Christianity
Anyone raised in a Protestant church remembers this hymn:

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; forward into battle see his banners go!

18. Yep, I know that song.
The UCC church I attended had a hymn set to that melody but with different words. I like the upbeat melody but hate the words, so I loved the UCC version.
