WTF is going on here?
I watched last night's Daily Show, and was disgusted with Colin Powell.

I log on to DU, and there's several people disgusted with Jon Stewert.

WTF????

Powell has proved himself to be nothing more than a Bush lackey. I thought he had changed. He fooled me.

Stewert is a comedian, who hosts a fake news and a variety show. He has not changed. He hasn't fooled me.

Some of you need to get a serious grip.

and a question.

What about international treaties
(Santiago) Colon?

I was asked why the United States did not honor the Santiago treaty in 1991 signed by the United States, which clearly states that any government democratically elected in the Western Hemisphere that seeks the support of other Organization of American States member nations, when threatened with an overthrow, will be assisted? That agreement was signed by the first President Bush in 1991.

Senator Harkin

October 13, 2004

The Honorable Colin Powell
Secretary of State
Department of State
2201 C Street, NW, Room 7261
Washington, DC 20520

Dear Secretary Powell:

I write to urge you to take immediate action to protect the life of Father Gerard Jean-Juste, the pastor of Saint Claire Church in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as well as the lives of several other Haitian priests and parishioners, who are reportedly in imminent danger.

Earlier this afternoon, I received reports that Saint Claire Church was surrounded by heavily-armed, hooded men, while Father Jean-Juste was inside. My Legislative Assistant, Ms. Kathleen Sengstock, contacted the U.S. Embassy in Haiti and spoke with Mr. Doug Griffith, the Deputy Chief of Mission, to express my grave concerns for Father Jean-Juste's safety. During a follow-up phone call, Mr. Griffith told Ms. Sengstock that he had informed both the Haitian National Police and the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) of the reports and that the Haitian National Police were sending a patrol to look into the situation.

Subsequent to the conversations with Mr. Griffith, I have been told that Father Jean-Juste was taken away by the hooded men, and I fear for his life. Moreover, I have been told that at least one other church in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince, Saint Yves Church, was surrounded by heavily-armed, hooded men in a similar manner. Two priests, Father Francois and Father Sauvageur, as well as several children, were inside this church, and I fear for their lives as well.

I implore you to urge MINUSTAH and the Interim Haitian Government to intervene immediately to save the lives of Father Gerard Jean-Juste and the priests and parishioners of Saint Claire and Saint Yves Churches. I would appreciate it if you would contact me as soon as possible to discuss these ominous developments, and I look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely,

Maxine Waters
Member of Congress

32. That is what I saw too...
Jon just quietly asking the questions -- and they were the right questions -- and Colin just spewing his bullshit for all the world to see. Anyone who watches Jon regularly knows that it was bullshit and knows that Jon thinks it's bullshit too.

Colin was given a wonderful chance to start telling some of the hard truths about what happened, but he decided to continue along his path of dishonesty.

The illusion of Colin Powell as a man of honor trying to work behind the scenes at State to put the brakes on Bush is dead forever.

Good riddance.

10. Yeah It's happened for a while
I remmeber he had Ed Gillespie on and was all hugs and cuddles with him.

If he starts really jumping down people's throats like we know he could, NOBODY but idiotic celebrities will go on his show.

They would jump all over Republicans as well as many if not most Democrats. It's all about exposing hypocracy.

It's just right now the Republicans control the entire government so they've go the market cornered on it. Ok so they normally do anyway...but the fact is if he got too brusque nobody would ever go on their show.

I don't blame Jon at all. He tries to get questions in, but if the person comes on and just recites the memo they were handed an hour prior to going on the show and aren't honest there is little he can do.

I'd be curious to see how many recitation guests are repeat guests and how many honest guests are repeat guests. My bet is that if someone comes on and recites he or she won't be back on.

Especially: "If he starts really jumping down people's throats like we know he could, NOBODY but idiotic celebrities will go on his show."

Moreso, TDS would become "Crossfire" for a few episodes, and THEN nobody but celebrities would go on his show.

I do wish he had called Powell on his statements about "no threat from Iraq" in 2001, and brought up the fact that whether Bush was talking about going to the U.N. when the memo was published is irrelevant, what about the fact that the memo alleges he was going to the U.N. strictly as cover for a war that was already decided upon?

That being said, I think he was using honey to try to extract some sort of admission that the Bushies did in fact jump the gun a bit. He thought it might be worth a shot with Powell, who is on record as having had reservations, and is now retired.

It didn't work, but that's all he was probably likely to ever accomplish, given this was a loyal former Bush official intent on defending his own ass as well. If he had pushed those issues, he would have gotten even more boiler-plate recitations of talking points, and the consequences you mention above (only idiotic celebrity guests).

Stewart walks a fine line. He HAS to in order to simply maintain a spot as the most substantially critical (of the Bush administration) voice on television. He knows we can't afford to lose that. He's thinking way ahead of all of us.

Plus, with all due respect to all of us here (myself included), he's thinking on a higher plane. Eventually, we DO have to rise above the partisan shrillness of "Crossfire" and the current state of the media to EVER solve the problems in this country.

He does try to get them talking in a certain direction. THat's the problem with an unrehearsed dialogue. No matter how good you are at steering a conversation, a trained opponent will keep the conversation where they want to.

How'd I get your number? I don't remember, it was right after I was looking at buying a speedboat.

You're buying a speedboat?

See? We're already talking about something else.

27. I was going to make that same point, too. It's easy for us to sit here...
... and criticize how Jon handled it. But it's a 10 minute (tops) interview, where he has to at least humor the guest or suffer dire consequences (i.e. eventually, no show or just idiotic guests).

Plus, if the guest is an intelligent, respected figure who refuses to give any quarter, there's really not much you can do.

Stewart does not control his guests.

28. We just have to hope his guests aren't controlled by someone else
you can tell the honest ones from the memorization ones too...To the trained eye that's good enough.

See that guy? He's being honest.

That one? He's a lying asshole who is just reciting a memo.

And it's not a partisan thing. I've seen republicans I've disagreeed with but they talk honestly. They answer questions, and the difficult points. They even admit the difficult points. Those ones I respect. It's the ones who get up there and look like a robot repeating lines....they disgust me.

at the beginning I was sitting on the couch, at the end, I was standing two feet in front of the TV screaming like a maniac.

Powell's lies were so hard to take.

The only criticism of Stewart I have is that he appeared to be a bit "star struck" by Powell's presence. But face it, it would take the toughest, smartest, most persistent REAL JOURNALIST in the world to make Powell fess up to anything....Stewart IS a comedian...we seem to have forgotten that...how sad is it that we depend on a COMEDY SHOW TO DIG UP THE TRUTH?

Powell's lies and spins are so deeply ingrained that nobody can crack them.

there is no way Jon can do any wrong, in my book. I can't think of any person in public life with as much intelligence and integrity as he has. I have no doubt he did what he often does: let the Bad Guy blather on and convict himself.

and I watch his show for the first part which is hilarious and factual as to showing the bullshit that is passing for news.

His interviews never take a hard line but they do show up people like Powell to be the assholes they are by their responses.

18. Don't worry about it
He'll blast some wingnut soon and everybody will looooove him again, celebrating his Return To The Fold with great rejoicing.

Until the next time he forgets that he's the spokesman for All Things Democratic, and not a comedian / TV show host. Then we'll go through Episode 756 of the Jon Stewart Betrayal.

:sarcasm:

And for the record, dammit, Bill Maher is, and for years has acknowledged being, a Libertarian. Not a Liberal, not a Democrat - a Libertarian. Which, by definition, renders it impossible for him to turn on the Party when he agrees with, or goes easy on, a Conservative guest.

(general observation, not directed at you, Midori)

He knows What's Up but it's his job as host to make his guests feel comfortable or he'd never get any guests. Powell was same old, same old. What did people expect? That Jon would lace into him ala O'Leilly or that Powell would make a startling Watergate-type confession on cable TV and sign this Administration's death warrant? Puh-lease!

The Daily Show is short enough, do we have to waste ten minutes listening to the poison.

I'm not mad at Jon!! I've loved him longer than most people here. The show hasn't been as great since the election but then again that might just be b/c every other night I have to watch Jon talking to yet another RW asshole.

Get a new booking agent, I'd rather listen to actors blather on about how great the movie and the cast is than listening to another asshole like Collin Powell.
