My condo neighbor just died of cancer / used medical marijuana

My neighbor/friend died of a rare liver cancer this Thursday and even though he was not liberal, he used medical marijuana in his last days, for pain, appetite and general relief, even though he was 58 he told his kids he never smoked. His cancer came on suddenly within two months was dead, lost 60 lbs of his original 165 lbs

I can imagine the police knocking on his door
I attend the funeral this coming weekend.

2. My prayer is may every Congressman who does not immediately sponsor

and/or vote for a law to legalize medical use of marijuana, be they red, yellow, black, white or brown, man or woman, Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, rot, then burn, in eternal hell. Or am I stating the case too strongly for someone who has never used the stuff in any manner even the first time?

8. I don't know what the Dems are scared of by proposing a law?

This should be a perfect wedge issue for anyone running against an incumbent Republican in the western US. It is a classic issue of states rights that has broad support from libertarian minded republicans. 4 States that voted for Bush in the last election allow medical marijuana. Alaska, Colorado, Montana, and Nevada.

3. This brings back memories

My mother had MS and too smoked medical marijuana. I knew this growing up and knew why. She was a very sweet person, she was 5' 9" and weighed 103lbs. She could not gain weight. She also had terrible pain for days on end. The marijuana helped take the edge off with out all the side effects of the stronger medicine that she could have taken. This did not hurt anyone else, I did not turn out to be a drug user because she needed it. Her doctor knew she used it and he was alright with it, he would have written a prescription if he could have.
It can be an effective pain reducer if used correctly. I don't understand why they won't allow doctors to prescribe it if needed.

7. The medical profession has only recently become a little more humane

about the treatment of pain.

30 years ago I worked as a nursing assistant on a medical unit. A 19 year old man dying of leukemia was prescribed narcotics to be given every four hours. However, he was in pain again after two hours. On the day he died, he spent several hours in agonizing pain because the nurses could not break these rules without losing their license. It was inhumane to deny him pain treatment using the rationale that he could become addicted. He was dying.

When I had major surgery almost 20 years ago I was in agonizing pain between shots. Now patients are allowed more control.

At last pain is recognized as something real. I think the only ones who can really take on this fight are the caregivers who take care of cancer patients... marijuana evokes such negative associations.

9. One thing that really bugs me is people who say that there is an

oral form that can be prescribed by a physician and that should be used instead. I think that Chairman Dean had this view during the primaries, too, and I just about fell off of my chair.

When my stepfather was dying of cancer he couldn't keep much of anything down for months. His meds had to be in suppositories and there was 1 pharmacist in town that could do this. During the last 3 months he had meds prescribed and changed every couple of days and this pharmacy was a 30 minute drive from the house. I think that MM could've helped with the nausea enough for him to possibly take his meds, and to take some of the edge off of the anxiousness and the pain.

My maternal grandmother was precribed it during chemo because she'd already lost a lot of weight. She said it din't work for shit, and cost too much. Apparently she got what she needed (this was before medical marijuana was legal here) because the weight gain slowed and we found some rolling papers in her bedside drawer when we were cleaning up after she passed.

I couldn't beleive she was on half a dozen opiates (bone cancer just might be the most painful way to go) but she could've gone to jail for smoking a little weed.
