Hey there,

I am a curiouse young Canuck and I usually visit DU to check out your latest progress in your fight against those crazy republicans. Being from Canada I am constantly bombarded with news about America.

Im not too sure if you've ever considered this but out of the 57 Channels I get on TV, 47 of them are American channels I get ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, Affiliates from Detroit, Rochester, Buffalo, Cleveland we even get CNN headline News and MSNBC. In my area the diffrence between expanded cable (57 channels)and normal cable (3 Channels) is only a few bucks a month, so 90% of the people I know get the same TV...the other 10% have satallite or something crazy.

Its wasn't until I was about 20 years old during the aftermath of Sept 11th that I really started to realize the difference between Canadian and American broadcasting, then it was after I watched Bowling for Columbine that I REALLY noticed a difference... (Alot of us have seen that film, before F911 it was like..."Hey man have you heard of Michael Moore? He's got a crazy movie about Gun laws in the states he compares it with Canada, makes us look good" - remember we we're in our early 20's, thats how we talk)

Anyway in a thread that I read on here earlier somebody was asking if foreign countries notice the whole Darwin trial thats going on and asked what we thought of it, have we heard about it? of course it's one of those things that makes you actually STOP on one of your crazy news channels, JAW DROPPING.

Well I have the pleasure to work at a Call Center (yes, you can stop reading if you like I am just a normal Joe) An Outsourced Call center for a major American Corporation, I get the pleasure to deal with members of America's bottom 2 credit classes about their Cell phone bills, I mainly speak to irate pimps, hoes, rednecks, ganstas, pshychopaths and soldiers. My co-workers and myself spend many a days talking about America (since they fee CNN on every TV screen in the building..except for during hockey...it keeps morale up)


So we see all your News, we had to sit through the whole Terry Schivo thing, we know the Runnaway bride story by heart, and we have also had to sit through Michael Jackson and Martha Stewert stories. Personally I see flaws in the way you deliver your news to the public especially when I compare it to our Canadian media. CNN is like...its like... People Magazine/Jerry Springer/700club/InTouch with a scoll.

Now I visit DU because I always here you guys being called the liberals, well we're pretty liberal up here in Canada...hell the "Liberal Party" has been in power for as long as I can remember.
And after visiting for almost a year now I really see a movement in your people and it's very entertaining to watch you try to bring down this insane Administration and I really hope you can do it I think the Downing Street Memo is a great start and I hope you keep up the good work, your neighbours are watching.

Thanks for writing. It's always a pleasure to hear from our Canuck friends. A glimpse of sanity is a good thing. A few things I'd like to respond to:

1) PLEASE don't judge the rest of the country by Florida. The governor is the pResident's brother. 'nuff said.
2) The war or drugs was, is and will always be BULLSHIT. Certain entities profit more off of the war on drugs than the drugs themselves.
3) We don't want anything to do with missile defense shields or galactic weapons either. Unfortunately, in this country, war and its obscene paraphernalia are products and profit centers.
4) We are trying like hell to keep the corporate bloodsuckers hands off of the people's money.

Thanks for the good words. A great many of us truly do treasure our friendship with our Northern neighbors. Also a great many of us envy your relationship with your government. It seems your government truly is of the people, for the people and by the people. Ours tends to focus on lie to the people, steal from the people and control the people.

Well our government isn't all rainbows and sunshines, I don't know if you guys have heard much about our "sponsership scandal" but basically the Liberal government was channeling money to several corporate whores...we're in the middle of an inquiry now...but it's nice to see we can hold our leaders accountable for stuff like that.

Maybe you and some call center pals might consider doing a web radio broadcast to get more news INTO the US! You could call it, oh, I dunno, Radio Free Canada, and announce that you are breaking down the barrier of the New Iron Curtain that the evil junta is trying to erect around the American population. ;)

I am old, and what I see here now sure as hell reminds me of what we were told about old Soviet Union & satellite countries.

Don't belittle yourself because of where ya work. There is dignity in just about anything, short of politics in the US. And your job does give you an interesting view/perspective on US culture which actually enriches us all. Please continue sharing your views and observations with us!

It is good for our citizens to get some feedback from working stiffs they can relate to and not write off as being some sort of elite class. Good to show the folks here just how bad we look to real people in other places, since the junta and their PRAVDA media explains away any criticism as coming from Old Europe, dismissing it as some quaint, but irrelevant, attitude from some bygone era of aristocracy. Good to hear what young voices of regular working class people have to say. It may well be medicine which helps shake our voters out of their coma.

...a real third party alternative: the NDP. I did some volunteer work on a New Democrat campaign back in the late 70's and I was very impressed. Your liberals are somewhat like our moderate Democrats. But the NDP is like the left wing, Progressive Caucus of our Democratic party.

I was glad to see the NDP make a comeback in the British Columbia elections last month. What's even more impressive is that in BC the Liberals and the New Democrats hold every seat in the legislature while the Conservatives have none. That's as it should be.

cold. Only visited once as a child, but I remember wearing a sweater in July. I live in very purple Mid-Tennessee (about 1/2 Blue, 1/2 Red), and i love the hot summers.

Anyway, thank you for your support! I work in a call center, too; although now I'm a Trainer so I don't have to actually talk to customers anymore. We have a lot of customers in Canada, and they were always polite, friendly, and understanding: unlike many of our customers here in the US. I could never get used to hearing "Zed" instead of "Zee", though. Although I have to admit "Zee" is easy to confuse with "Cee" or even "Bee" or Dee".

I believe that the voice of reason will someday win out in our country. I believe we could learn a lot from our Brothers and Sisters to the north!

We sure would hate to see that happen, but for now, we still rely on a (not perfect but almost perfect) "paper ballot" election system which is closely monitored by an independent entity that has been put in place by the federal government (on the federal level).

This reliable system (standardized across the country) insures that each voting box has approximately the same size, and that its content is counted (and re-counted) by the same group of volunteers who represent the political parties (one representant per party).

For the moment, this system is stable (sure it does cost taxpayer's money, but its benefits are for all to enjoy in terms of improved honesty in the electoral process).

Besides, we also don't want to imperil our public health care system so, the tories can waste their time and cheat and/or lie all they want (on TV and on radio waves), a majority of us know too well what these hypocrits are after... (greed)

Ever since I moved close enough to look at Canadian TV, I watch it to get another perspective on US politics, etc. And learn more about our neighbours to the north. (but my other motive was watch the CFL.)

Anyway, you are dead on about your observations. The mainstream media here in the US leaves me wondering most of the time what are they thinking??? But that only means I need to reground and look at CBC to get the real deal. Thanks to the internet, I look at a wide variety of news sources, and also to DU.

Even though it's slow to get change, I believe the truth about this administration will be exposed. If we had Canadian TV, Internet, with ready access to international news, I believe Nixon would have been impeached sooner. So I am hopeful with the massive coverage by the international press, thinking Americans will get a clue and demand change in the White House.

If you're watching the mainstream media up there, then all you're watching is the damm rethuglikan fluff we are trying to get repaired down here. It's even worse when you know what is really going on.

I don't watch TV unless someone here says something really great is on CSpan or whatever. Barely on speaking terms with my local paper as well.

I do tech support (call center for geeks) so I can appreciate talkin' with a normal guy. So here is my request from one normal person to another, get out to someplace like http://TruthOut.org or http://buzzflash.com before you look at the DU as having the same addlebrained information as the rest because most of US are boycotting mainstream news.

Then, when you start seeing the discrepencies, start sending emails or letters to CNN et al and ask them why don't they report the truth? A lot of us here have spent a lot of time doing that very thing and at least on the surface, there is some attempt to comply with our requests.

CNN co-founder Reese Schoenfeld said (May 16, 05 on the Big Show with John Gibbons) that it is the media's responsibility to lie for the government during times of war and not too long after that Ted Turner got up and talked about putting CNN International programming on the US feed. DU had noted it weird that you could find the truth on the international CNN, but not the US. Seems Ted wants to at least by general appearances distance himself from Schoenfeld's remarks.

Newspapers seem even more responsive, maybe because the DEM market is probably large enough for them to consider. My local STRIB hired a full time Reader's Rep and she even showed up today at a media fair that wasn't covered by any of the mainstream media.

It took them 30 days for my local STRIB to get the guts to publish the Downing Street Memo, but they did and they were the first here to do so. Tonight, the Bolton news is out on AP and already 130 some odd papers have picked it up. At least they are paying attention now. How that translates into fair and balanced coverage, we'll see.

Yeah I hear ya, I'm not saying I watch all the crap.. it's just what we get. However when I get home at 7am (I work night shift) I always get a good chuckle by turning it to Headline News, The news makes me so mad sometimes, this is why I think they have such nice looking female newscasters... Its hard to get mad while watching the news when its being reported by a cute young prettied up blond.

Naturally I hate corporate whores more then regular whores, so these blonds don't attract me, but I always get a good chuckle when watching Headline news.

I like hearing the "real" news in a quick flash report on Headline News, you can watch a whole Newscast in under 5 minutes. Then I come on the computer and read about it on DU and other blogs, then I watch the Daily show to see how Jon feels about the issue.

Once the temperature goes below 50 I have a real problem. In the winter I wear as many as four layers (thermal undershirt, turtleneck, sweatshirt/sweater and coat) and I'm often still cold. Even when indoors with three layers and the heat on I still shiver...I'm just screwed up. The hypothyroidism is the main problem.
