Who bothers to listen to NPR anymore?
Janeane is going off on NPR's Melissa Block, which prompts me to ask the question, "Does anyone listen to NPR anymore?"

Personally, I turned it off shortly after 9/11, I couldn't take the Bush butt kissing from Juan Williams, Neil Conan and Mara Liasson (Lie-Ass-on) no longer.

4. I used to, but I don't anymore.
Especially now that we get AAR here. I pretty much only listen to radio while driving and I changed my radio tuning from NPR to AAR as soon as we got it here. I sure as hell don't miss it either.

5. Same here and stopped at the same time, pretty much.
I found Mike Malloy not long after. Neil Conan was even worse than Juan.

"Eyes on the Prize" indeed, Mr Williams.

it (ahem) motivates me to get out of bed, walk the dog, make breakfast and tend to the banking/email.

8. NPR: No Point (to it) Radio
I used to listen to Diane Rehm sometimes but after the stolen election I am unable to listen to the network's neutered uninteresting commentary. It simply makes me want to peuk.
Basically listen only to Air America Radio (now in D.C. & suburbs) & to Democracy Now with Amy Goodman.

9. NPR
My friends used to tease me because I was probably the biggest NPR fan in the state of Michigan. Lately though, (coincidentally, right after the latest fund drive),they've been covering a lot of religous/conservative topics that I never would have donated to. I still listen to the weekend programming because it's light-hearted and fun to listen to. Otherwise, Ann Arbor now has AAR and that has replaced NPR as my primary radio station. I doubt I'll be donating my cash during the Fall Fund Drive.

10. Sloth kept my clock radio set to them
until about 3 months ago. I woke up very unpleasantly to the sound of one sleazy Repuglican after another, culminating with Ken Mehlman, all lying about how swell for us Bush's social security ripoff was going to be if those mean old Democrats didn't get in the way.

Since waking up screaming "BULLSHIT" is a lousy way to wake up, I've since switched the dial to the local classical station.

All those sleazy GOP talking heads did it to me. Each one was worse than the last one, and they were all slick as snot on a doorknob and twice as nasty.

11. I stopped listening after they bagged on Britain,
calling it an insignificant country without any regard to its influence on everything from the industrial revolution to the Beatles. It was some sort of Dennis Miller wannabe, who like Dennis Miller was a know-it-all who didn't have a clue about jack shit.

All Things Bland and Chirpy. Morning Sedation. Can't stand the sound of them. Talk of the Nation has been a black hole since Ray Suarez left.

Fresh Air is still good; Terry Gross has balls. Also: This American Life. That's about it.

15. No more, and I used to be an avid listener. It's AAR exclusively now.
We listened loyally to NPR while living in various Midwest states. It was the only thing going that offered substance and quality. BUT, that quickly dissipated post 9/11 and we began to tune out - and listen to nothing, since that's what was available. It was around that time I turned to the internet.

Today, in our house we get news, info and inspiration from AAR on the radio, C-span on TV and DU and a few choice blogs on the internet. AAR and DU dominate.

17. It's better than Republican Radio.
They have some fascinating human interest stories, "A Prairie Home Companion" the car guys...

They have to have some right wing points of view if they want to claim the neutrality they do.

Tavis Smiley isn't on in my area anymore...but there is a good discussion program in its place that I always catch when I drive home.

NPR, forced to their knees by the repukes - now feeling the flames of evisceration. It's a sad story that mirrors the decline of the American republic. Now comes the Dark Times.

21. If I didn't hate commercials and crappy music, I wouldn't!
They've become almost un-listen-toable, but living in Oklahoma leaves me with no alternatives whatsoever. It's all classic rock, country and crackpot radio here, so NPR is still the best (least terrible) option.

But I've REALLY noticed a difference since 9/11. They're just part of the WH stenography pool now. It's SOOOO infuriating!! I usually just turn the volume down and talk to myself (it's much better conversation).

But my big day is Saturday. Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me. This American Life. On the Media. And then blues all night. I love NPR, and I don't think they kiss Bush ass nearly as badly as everything else other than AAR, which I can't get since their outlet is Chicago is about 2 watts.

26. I still listen
to NPR. Even if they do broadcast more middle-of-the-road views than AAR. There's always something I didn't know coming on, and they have some great human interest pieces. Like the all-woman radio journalist company in Pakistan I heard about today. Or the first women to ride around the world on a bicycle.

I've tuned in to AAR exactly once and, despite being pretty progressive in viewpoint, I don't need the radio to tell me that the Bush Regime sucks skunk butt. That's what I got you guys for. AAR bored the crap out of me, to be honest.

:hide:

I listen to NPR to learn things I didn't know. That still happens. So I still listen to NPR.

I turned it off after 9-11 because I "felt" something had shifted in the way they were reporting things. A lot of my friends thought I was being conspiratorial, so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who tuned them out.

It's not so bad - but I agree the shift towards bushco propaganda is nauseating. Still beat the alternatives here in Vegas.

I laugh every time they bring out Cookie/Coakie/Cokey Roberts as a political analyst - cracks me up.

30. We all have very high expectations of NPR
and we're all very let down when they bend over backwards to be fair to what we consider to be a corrupt, evil Administration.

And while I understand our revulsion--believe me, I've felt it more than a few times myself--I still trust NPR more than the other radio news sources. I (mostly) love AAR, but let's face it, it's a commercial enterprise with a huge ax to grind (and doing its own corporate whoring in the process.)

I listen to my local affiliates when they're doing the morning edition/all things considered newscasts, when I'm in the mood. I'll listen to Tom and Ray's "Car Talk," one of the most sneakily subversive shows ever, as long as they're willing to do the show. "This American Life" I don't catch often enough but it's brilliant, and you'll NEVER hear anything like it on a commercial station.

Yes, the college and Pacifica stations are ideologically purer, but NPR still gets it done. And even though I've put it off, I'll probably contribute again this year, as soon as I finish completing my letter to them about how disappointed I've been in their handling of the Preznit and his crappy policies.

In my portion of Eastern Iowa it's either NPR or RW radio (if you want talk radio). NPR is the lesser of two evils. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get AAR soon.

34. Still listen daily
though not every hour of Morning Edition or ATC. I much prefer the Minnesota Public Radio segments over the national segments.

I also like the local talk shows (Midday and Midmorning on MPR, and many Wisconsin Public Radio Ideas Network shows) during the day.

I still do not get AAR here on the radio, so my Ed Schultz broadcast comes from the online stream.

It is also worth checking out Joel Hietkemp on KFGO-AM radio. His show is streamed from 8:30-11am M-F.

36. I heard Naomi Klein say, at the Conf for Media Reform
that she hates hearing that people are stopping watching Public TV and listening to NPR, and she hates to hear people have stopped watching all the TV news shows. She went on to say that this is EXACTLY what the "other side" wants. If no one watches Public TV or listens to NPR, those communication outlets will die, and that is one of the ultimate aims of conservatives. She said when she hears someone say, "Just turn it off...just don't watch," she thinks of the smog in the atmosphere: would you say, "Just don't go outside."? Her point in the speech was that it is WRONG to just turn off the news....we must watch, watch, and reform and reform, and develop alternate media. I think she is correct, and I will continue to watch and listen.

Yep, Marketplace to the astute Public Radio listeners know that it is not NPR but Minnesota Public Radio who produces it. MPR does it under the American Public Media distributing arm.
