11. CoIntelPro!
Only two FBI officers were ever convicted for the numerous crimes carried out under the CoIntelPro program. One of them was W. Mark Felt. Ronald Reagan pardoned him.
That's right! The Great Communicator PARDONED Deep Throat.

Update <2005-5-31 13:54:38 by BooMan>:Ronald Reagan's Presidential Pardons

W. Mark Felt- Clemency for authorizing FBI agents to break into Vietnam protestors' offices without warrants.

12. How far we have come.
W. Mark Felt- Clemency for authorizing FBI agents to break into Vietnam protestors' offices without warrants.

What he did is perfectly legal today under the Patriot Act, isn't it? Progress, you say? For some, certainly.

20. Does It Make Sense...
that someone convicted of spying and breaking and entering without a warrant on war protesters would risk his career over a president doing basically the same thing.

Wouldn't this guy have had to be a lackey of J Edgar Hoover to have been so high up in the hierarchy of the FBI in 1974? Did Nixon pass him over for promotion?

I'm just trying to guage his motivations before granting him hero status. I applaud his exposure of Nixon's corruption but do not accept without questioning his "loyalty and sense of duty."

Why keep silent for so long if he didn't fear retaliation of some sort?

25. Allegedly Felt's motivation is that he was passed over for promotion.
when Hoover died. I don't know if that is true but it is plausible. If so then Felt isn't a hero. Just a vindictive, spiteful man. Who, ironically enough, destroyed another vindictive, spiteful man.

28. Felt was not promoted because Nixon appointed a political operative
named L. Patrick Gray to do his bidding at the FBI. Remember, in All The President's Men, Deep Throat told Woodward that it wasn't the Watergate break-in they were covering up -- it was way beyond that to stuff they couldn't even imagine.

Reagan pardoned Deep Throat -- what delicious irony.

This just cost woodward and bernstein some serious money...
Bwah hah hah hah. Fine by me, especially since I doubt Deep Throat was anything more than a figment of Woodstein's imaginations

Woodward and Bernstein became Woodstein-for brevity I suspect.
