Bush Says Finishing Mission Is Best Memorial to Fallen

ARLINGTON, Va., May 30 - President Bush paid a Memorial Day tribute today to generations of Americans who have given their lives for the nation, saying that while the United States has always been a "reluctant warrior," its soldiers have been willing to give their all to rid the world of oppressors and spread the ideals of freedom.

Jonathan Ernst/Reuters
A U.S. Coast Guard honor guard marched toward a Memorial Day ceremony today at Arlington National Cemetery.
Speaking at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, Mr. Bush saluted all those who have died in uniform, singling out the more than 400,000 Americans who died in World War II. The United States, he said, "will always honor the character and the achievements of your brave generation."

He then turned to the wars fought under his command, focusing on Iraq, where 139,000 troops are stationed and where 1,647 have died, according to Pentagon figures last updated on Friday. They include 1,264 killed in action. An additional 12,630 had been wounded through Friday, about half of them seriously enough that they did not return to duty.

As he often does, Mr. Bush lumped together the military campaign in Afghanistan, begun in 2001 to root out Al Qaeda and the Taliban after the Sept. 11 attacks, with the war in Iraq, launched in March

---i especially love that last paragraph.....

13. Smile, Smile, Smile
by Wilfred Owen

Head to limp head, the sunk-eyed wounded scanned
Yesterday's Mail; the casualties (typed small)
And (large) Vast Booty from our Latest Haul.
Also, they read of Cheap Homes, not yet planned;
For, said the paper, "When this war is done
The men's first instinct will be making homes.
Meanwhile their foremost need is aerodromes,
It being certain war has just begun.
Peace would do wrong to our undying dead, --
The sons we offered might regret they died
If we got nothing lasting in their stead.
We must be solidly indemnified.

Though all be worthy Victory which all bought,
We rulers sitting in this ancient spot
Would wrong our very selves if we forgot
The greatest glory will be theirs who fought,
Who kept this nation in integrity."
Nation? -- The half-limbed readers did not chafe
But smiled at one another curiously
Like secret men who know their secret safe.
This is the thing they know and never speak,
That England one by one had fled to France
(Not many elsewhere now save under France).
Pictures of these broad smiles appear each week,
And people in whose voice real feeling rings
Say: How they smile! They're happy now, poor things.

The same old lie...

After all, he himself said "mission accomplished", so why can't the media get it right.

:sarcasm:

20. He is awash in blood
Blood and destruction shall be so in use,
And dreadful objects so familiar,
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter’d with the hands of war;
All pity chok’d with custom of fell deeds:
And Cæsar’s spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry ‘Havoc!’ and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

27. I agree
we should finish the mission of the last two world wars and scour the nation of corporate fascism and hold dynastic families accountable for money received from war profiteering, construction of death camps, subversion of democracy and bringing war criminals to America.

The best memorial to two world wars would be the symbolic prosecution of three generations of Bushes whose hands are covered in American blood, tyranny draped in a dishonored flag, words drowned in the Hitlerian echos.

Yeah, finish it. WWII isn't over. Nothing else will be until the real enemies of humanity, a bare handful of untouchables are brought to account.
