Sales of More Expensive Wines Are Booming
but who is buying it? Certainly not the average American. The people whose suffer most from Bush's policies. The people who overwhemingly rejected him at the ballot box. And the idiots who voted against their best interests and rewarded this moron with a second term.

I keep thinking of that scene in Farenheit 9/11, in which Bush is addressing the elite, or as he calls them, "his base".

WASHINGTON - Wine drinkers are developing more extravagant tastes. Wines priced $11 and higher are selling much more strongly than

Sales of those wines have risen by 19 percent from last year, said Danny Brager, vice president of ACNielsen's alcohol beverage team. Research shows that a 6 percent increase in sales of wine costing $7 to $11 and a gain of 1.4 percent for wines costing less than $7.

He said there is excitement in the industry about new wines, new packaging and new contemporary-looking labels.

"Along with the economy improving over the last couple of years, it's helping to move the price up that consumers are willing to pay," Brager said.

That makes sense to Phil Hein, who used to stick to $8 to $10 wines but now spends as much as $15. His tastes got more expensive as he learned more about wine.

1. I still buy the cheap stuff.......
N.Y. Taylor wines....and for some reason everyone loves the low alcohol 8.5% red wine. I got started on them about 20yrs ago for cooking use. If its good enough for cooking its good enough for drinking.

Who would figure my $25-35 wine days are now $7-15. (half gallon)

upreme Court Strikes Interstate Shipping Bans in NY and Michigan
The United States Supreme Court ruled Monday that wine consumers may buy directly from out-of-state wineries, striking down laws in Michigan and New York that banned interstate shipments. In all, 23 states have laws that ban interstate wine shipments, eight with discriminatory laws similar to those in New York and Michigan.

“States have broad power to regulate liquor,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy in the majority opinion. “This power, however, does not allow States to ban, or severely limit, the direct shipment of out-of-state wine while simultaneously authorizing direct shipment by in-state producers. If a State chooses to allow direct shipment of wine, it must do so on evenhanded terms.” Kennedy was joined on the majority opinion by Justices Antonin Scalia, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer.

“The current patchwork of laws—with some States banning direct shipments altogether, others doing so only for out-of-state wines, and still others requiring reciprocity—is essentially the product of an ongoing, low-level trade war,” wrote Kennedy.
