Next week, Progressive Democrats of America, in partnership with United for Peace and Justice and Code Pink, will initiate a nationwide campaign to demand that Congress and George W. Bush immediately and without delay implement and execute a plan to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq. This campaign will involve calls, letters, faxes and direct lobbying of members of Congress. This National Call-In Week will begin on May 31st and continue through June 3rd.
Take action on this now.

HANDS OFF PUBLIC BROADCASTING! (From Common Cause)

…There's a war on, a war for the soul and integrity of National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
At stake is our right to know the truth from sources who don't have to pay homage to the bottom line, and whom we've trusted for years. Just yesterday, we learned in the New York Times1 that the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), along with its chairman, Kenneth Tomlinson, told its staff that it should redirect money for NPR away from national newscasts and public affairs programming towards music programs. Tomlinson is also considering a plan to monitor Middle East coverage on NPR programs for evidence of bias, an issue particularly sensitive for the Administration.
Without citing any evidence, Tomlinson has decided that "Big Bird" leans left, despite evidence from two CPB-funded polls2 that suggest that an overwhelming number of Americans are happy with NPR and PBS programming.

We are committed to fighting back and we need your help. Please sign our petition to protect NPR and PBS from partisan meddling and preserve what many Common Cause members consider to be a highly valued source of news and public affairs coverage:

PROTECT CHILDREN FROM MILITARY RECRUITERS

Buried deep within the No Child Left Behind Act is a provision that
requires public high schools to hand over the private contact
information of students in public high schools to military recruiters. If a school does not comply, it risks losing vital federal education
funds.

The Student Privacy Protection Act of 2005 amends section 9528 of No
Child Left Behind to prohibit military recruiters from contacting
students unless these minors and their parents specifically "opt in"
and consent to receive such communications.

JOIN A VIRTUAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING (From Wes Clark):

As we continue to think about national security, we should consider that global warming is a growing issue within the national security framework.

National security today demands that we pay attention to a myriad of policy areas that were previously left to others, such as economics, health care systems, schools, and yes, even global warming.
I've joined Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Senator John McCain in a bi-partisan effort to bring Americans together to do everything we can to better understand the consequences of global warming.

Join me in a virtual march on Washington to stop global warming today!

DEMAND DRUG SAFETY:

Dear CALPIRG supporter,

Last week we told you about the CALPIRG backed Prescription Drug Right to Know Act. Thank you for helping to pass this legislation that will make sure drug companies are reporting all of their drug tests, not just the tests that will sell their product.

A second bill that will ensure regulators get all the information they need about a drug's safety is SB 380 by Senator Elaine Alquist (from San Jose). Currently officials with the Food and Drug Administration estimate they receive only 1 in 10 reports of serious drug reactions. This means it can take months or years longer than it should to collect the information needed to flag a drug as unsafe. SB 380 would ensure FDA officials get the reports they need in a timely fashion.

Please take a moment and ask your Assemblymember to protect patient health by supporting this important legislation.

TELL CONGRESS: NO ON AHPS (BAD HEALTH CARE PLANS) (From Care2)

Here's why proposed legislation exempting AHPs from consumer safeguards puts your family's healthcare at risk:
· Higher Premiums: AHP insurers will raise your rates if you get sick;
· Unpaid Medical Bills: AHP insurers will not be required to have cash on hand to make sure your claims can be paid;
· Rejected Claims: AHP insurers will not allow you to appeal when they deny a claim;
· Limited Benefits: AHP insurers will restrict essential healthcare services for consumers, including OB-GYN choice and mandatory mammogram coverage for women; and
· Poor Management: AHP insurers will report, on a limited basis, to the ill equipped U.S. Department of Labor.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, 20 million employees and dependents would face rate increases, and as many as 100,000 of the sickest people would lose coverage entirely if AHPs are allowed to operate outside of state consumer protection laws.

Can America really afford healthcare without security and the most basic consumer protections?

Please sign this petition to send a letter today opposing Association Health Plans, and tell Congress healthcare without consumer protections is healthcare that hurts.
