On this Memorial Day, I am ashamed to be an American.
I never thought I'd ever think those words. But today, given the war crimes that have been perpetuated in my (and your) name, I feel like a WWII German citizen who despised what was happening and couldn't stop it.

Our government, under Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld, et al, has not only destroyed our reputation as a beacon of freedom to the world, but has also made us universally despised.

Way back when, I was drafted, served a couple of years, and as much as military life sucked, (as opposed to the movies you're watching today), I became grateful for the opportunity to give something back to my country that had given me the gift of freedom.

What everyone must understand, is that the young people being slaughtered and maimed in Iraq and Afghanastan are making sacrifices, not for democracy, but for the benefit and profit of a handful of modern-day robber barons, corporations and outright thugs.

I don't know how you plan to observe this day. But please don't do it by honoring a government that has brought dishonor upon all of us. (Maybe Johnny Cash had the right idea about dressing in black.)

1. I have felt the same way for a long time now, ever since Iraq was
invaded. I am old enough to remember the gory details of Viet Nam, and to see it happen again so soon is gut wrenching.

3. If I am ashamed, it is because I should of done more during
the 2000 election. I should of shouted and stomped my feet until I was heard about the theft of the election and yet I stood so silent and let it happen. By not speaking out, I have allowed the raping of our constitution and the deaths of the soldiers who are fighting this war.

I am truly Ashamed, but not of being an American, but by not being an American.....

4. All the screaming in the world wouldn't have mattered.
Short of a coup d etat, there was nothing any of us could do about the 2000 election.

They were organized, we were unprepared, and they stole our country. And given the state of modern elections, (not to mention the brain dead Democratic Party), I don't know how we're ever going to get it back.
