Devils Steaming Over Criticism of Name

TRENTON, N.J. - What chance do the New Jersey Devils give a proposal that would give the pro hockey franchise a less demonic name? Think hell freezing over.


"I can assure you the Devils name will never change, and I think there are more important things to be thinking about than something that will never happen," team CEO Lou Lamoriello said. "It's who we are and what we want to be."

State Assemblyman Craig Stanley is taking issue with a satanic symbol representing the state's National Hockey League team, which has won three Stanley Cup championships.

1. What a joke.

The New Jersey Devil has been a proud part of the state's folklore for hundreds of years. It's a great symbol for a sports team and a reminder that NJ has a history and mysterious wild places to boot.

This will go over like a lead balloon. I imagine assemblyman Stanley will end up thrown out of office by outraged Devils fans--if they don't kidnap him and turn him loose alone at night in the Pine Barrons (the NJ Devil's stomping grounds) first.

How frigging dumb. I grew up in NJ, and my grandmother lives very close to where the Jersey Devil was "born." When I was a kid, it scared the hell out of her to go outside at night and get wood from the woodpile. Every little noise could be the Jersey Devil. I also wrote my High School AP History senior paper on the old Devil.

This guy is a jerk. Good for everyone saying he is.
