I'm looking for links to articles about military recruiters ...
Edited on Sun May-29-05 08:00 PM by BattyDem

going to extremes and even breaking the law when trying to manipulate young people into signing up. Anything that talks about the pressure, the lies, the bullying tactics, etc.

Also, I recall an article about recruiters convincing a minor to sign papers that required him to enlist when he graduated. I thought I bookmarked it, but I can't find it. :-( If anyone has a link, I'd appreciate it. :-)

Thanks!

1. Google: recruiter lies pressure tactics
I got about 563,000 hits. You might be able to pare that down a bit by repeating search terms.

2. I did that earlier and there were so many hits to sift through ...
Edited on Sun May-29-05 08:31 PM by BattyDem

so I figured I'd ask DUers because I know a lot articles have been posted about this topic recently and many people keep extensive bookmarks. I didn't bookmark any of the articles concerning this topic because I didn't think I needed them ... but I was talking to someone today who is very interested in learning more. I was hoping some DUers could point me in the right direction so I wouldn't have to dig through half a million Google hits, LOL!

I've been searching DU, but I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for. I keep coming up with threads about recruiters visiting high schools, students protesting recruiters, schools banning recruiters, etc.

6. Watch out for this one:

Colin Hadley spends most of his days after school skateboarding or playing Halo II on his new X-Box with friends. He sleeps until noon or later on weekends and rarely, if ever, does any schoolwork outside the classroom, where he pulls down solid C's and a few D's — just enough to get by. He's the typical 15-year-old American boy: cocksure in demeanor, certain the world revolves around him, and confident that life is going to serve him well.

And he's the new "target of interest" for U.S. military recruiters who've begun signing up boys as young as 14 for military service, which they will be required to begin when they turn 18.

"It's a sweet deal," says Hadley, who boasts that he bought his X-Box with the enlistment bonus he received after signing up last month. "I don't have to do hardly anything for three years, but they're paying me now."

Not real, according to: http://www.snopes.com/politics/satire/recruit.asp

Seen "in the wild" here, for example: http://uslaboragainstwar.org/article.php?id=8028

(along with some stuff you might actually be able to use... But *do* check it out! :-)

but I thought there was another story about a boy who was under 18 but was manipulated into signing papers which said he would enlist after graduation. Damn ... I wish I could remember the details ... I read so much of this stuff on DU that sometimes my head just can't hold all the info, LOL!

I will check out that site. Thanks. :toast:
