Conyers needs 100,000 sigs for IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I caught John Bonifaz (constitutional lawyer) on Randi Rhodes
he was talking about IMPEACHMENT in relation to the Downing Street memo-they need public support to take the first steps. I know there's a lot of threads about Conyers and the 100,000 sigs, but
I wanted to make sure everyone knew it's not JUST an investigation of the memo, but the beginning of OUR DREAM!!!!! check out bonifaz's site <http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/>

MEMORANDUM
To: Rep. John Conyers, Jr.
From: John C. Bonifaz
Date: May 23, 2005
RE: The President’s Impeachable Offenses

The recent release of the Downing Street Memo provides new and compelling evidence that the President of the United States has been actively engaged in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the United States Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq. If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime under Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution: “The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

May 27, 2005

Dear Friend:

As many of you are aware, a classified memo was recently disclosed in Great Britain that I believe has serious ramifications for the integrity of the United States Government.

Dubbed the “Downing Street Memo,” but actually comprising the minutes of a meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair and other top British government officials, the memo casts serious doubt on many of the contentions of the Bush Administration in the lead up to the Iraq war. With over 1,600 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen killed in Iraq, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and over $200 billion in taxpayer funds going to this war effort, we cannot afford to stand by any longer.

Along with 88 of my colleagues, I wrote to the President requesting answers about this grave matter. Thus far, our search for the truth has been stonewalled and I need your help. I believe the American people deserve answers about this matter and should demand directly that the President tell the truth about the memo. To that end, I am asking you to sign on to a letter to the President requesting he answer the questions posed to him by 89 Members of Congress.

I will personally insure that this letter is delivered to the White House.

You can read the letter here and sign on to it below. You and I know the White House is just hoping that this matter will fade away, but in a few short weeks, with our steadfastness, the memo has found its way into leading newspapers and White House press briefings. With your help, we can hold this Administration accountable.

Please pass on this important letter to your friends and colleagues, and ask them to sign as well.

Thank you for your help and support.

John Conyers, Jr.

SIGN THIS Letter to President Bush Concerning the Downing Street Memo

EMAIL CONGRESSMAN CONYERS to thank him for this and ask him to introduce a Resolution of Inquiry.

Sign Conyers' Letter to Bush. Go to http://www.johnconyers.com/

but it was really exciting to hear a constitutional lawyer talk very seriously about impeachment. Every time someone has brought it up here, they get shot down "no way" "not with a republican congress'
but I've been thinking about it a lot lately, because the crimes are SO big (especially lying to Congress) and there has to be some decent Republicans-some that care about their kids and their future.

14. May be a pipe dream
but the thought, evidence and energy is gathering. I would settle for forcing the matter to be dealt with even on the committee level and getting it into the Congressional Record just so history will show that there was an effort to rid ourselves of this pestilence. I've been so thoroughly disabused of the idea that impeachment is possible (even by my good-guy representative) that I dare not hope for more - but will never stop trying.

37. Doesn't Matter
The question of impeachment and the unanswered questions and the stonewalling once it gets into Congress will have to get media attention. Furthermore, Conyers is smart. He is not talking impeachment yet. He is wisely taking it step-by-step.

Worst-case scenario for us:
The effect will be to make the Republican party at least a little less popular in 2006 elections and 2008 Pres election.

Best-case scenario for us:
The issue will get slow movement and impeachment will become a major question prior to 2006 elections. Dems will be voted in and then subsequently impeach the Pres in 2006. Additionally, more progressive and more anti-war Dems will be voted in due to the radicalization of the public by all of the fascist and imperialist moves of the neo-cons.

When the Filibuster thing went down I wasn't on the "this is a big victory" side of the issue. Impeach and Imprison is what I would consider victory. This is a start. Make them defend themselves. They are sitting on top of a house of cards, held together with lies and spin. Pull on the right card and down she goes. Conyers has huge brass balls, we need to get behind him on this. Signed, kicked, nominated, e-mailed, put on a pedistal...
